I've read a number of articles about the 2023 draft being weak at the C position. Brad Biggs in today's article says 2024 is supposed to be a better draft for centers. I thought that was mighty good to hear.
LINK "Center position will be a priority in the offseason. The 2023 draft was not a good one for centers. Three were drafted in the second round: Joe Tippmann (Wisconsin, New York Jets), Homewood-Flossmoor product John Michael Schmitz (Minnesota, New York Giants) and Juice Scruggs (Penn State, Houston Texans). Tippmann has played guard for the Jets. Ricky Stromberg (Arkansas, Washington Commanders) went in Round 3. That’s it for the top four rounds. It’s early — and scouts prefer to lean on late-season evaluations for picks at the top of the draft — but next year’s draft projects to be stronger for centers."
Poles better snag one then, maybe 2, but the trash he's put at C the last 2 years is not acceptable.
He needs to get 2.
Sign a mid-level FA AND draft one. They can fight it out in TC for who starts.
Patrick and Whitehair are goners.
Maybe invest a pick in a pure center... best you can get. And then follow up with a G/C guy who can be a very solid backup at either position. Those young project guys are available in every draft.
Wait a minute, the Bears need a center? It's not that critical of a role. Just throw anybody at it.
LOL, you'd think they'd value the position. The best Bears offensive lines in my lifetime were anchored in the middle, at center, by All-Pro Jay Hilgenburg, and more recently, All-Pro Olin Kreutz. That position is the heart and soul of a great OL. And it is a position that pays dividends for many years if you have a great center.
Between Hilgy and Kreutz they had 13 Pro Bowl years. They had 27 years in the NFL. Stellar careers where they elevated the offensive linemen around them. Why on earth would you NOT invest a relatively high draft pick in a center who can anchor your OL for a decade or far more than a decade?
I hope the Bears invest that 2nd round draft pick in the best C in the 2024 draft class. Best. Get someone who can play at an elite level - for the next decade or more than a decade. Want a great OL? It begins with that center - and no, throwing a Lucas Patrick at the position won't get it done.
