We're hoping to go to see our village's fireworks show this evening. It is at a public park just 1.25 miles due north of our house. We can walk there all on the side streets and cross the only major street at a crosswalk where the PD always stations an officer to stop traffic for folks needing to get across. The park is huge. Incorporating several football fields, soccer pitches and baseball diamonds. Several with bleachers for seating. Tones of paved parking too. They close off all the parking and bring it one of the larger (and better quality) travelling carnivals. The carnival places all the rides and other attractions on the parking lots and the open grassy areas are reserved for local organizations to have booths and other things. There is always organized activities for the kids. It is a wonderful family experience with fast food stalls, rides and plenty of open grass for folks to sit.
The only issue is the weather. We have a big storm front stalled directly overhead at the moment. I've had about 1.5 inches of rain since midnight, and it looks like much more to come. So, we may have to stay home tonight.
Spouse has some med issues to address so she got medevac'd to Walter Reed a couple weeks ago, so we're currently here in our nation's capital. We were looking to spending the 4th at the National Mall but we're being told that this'll be the first, full-blown-no restrictions celebration since the COVID lockdowns and they're expecting the turnout to be completely massive.
So a friend invited us down to their home in Williamsburg. We'll be taking the parade and whatnot in Colonial style!

I saw a poll today that 18% of Americans age 18-34 say they are extremely proud to be Americans.
Maybe the other 82% would enjoy life in a country, like Russia... and enjoy the benefits of a life with Mr. Putin and killing Ukrainians. It reminds me of that old song that says, "You don't know what you have until it's gone." We have it so very good in this country. Perfect? No. Far from it. But we are truly blessed to live as we do here.

For better or worse, these young people will be running this country after we are long gone. Personally, I am glad that they also see it as “far from perfect.” Maybe that will inspire some of the 82% to work to make “a more perfect Union.” Speaking of Russia, their scientists and other professionals are now leaving the country in large numbers.
