They could cut him, but they won’t. He’s the only one of these 1-yr. guys who got an immediate extension. They like him. But if the plan is to have 6 WRs and there are 3 locks, that leaves room to add 3 guys: my (1) and (2) plus Lazard or other quality FA. I would be very satisfied if that happens.
What would keep them from cutting him if they acquire better receivers? They didn't like him enough to fully guarantee even $100K of his salary...I think that tells you their level of "like" when it comes to EQ.
Yeah, if they do everything I said in my last post, then they might cut him. My worry is that Poles will not do everything I want him to do. In that case, they will have EQ as WR3-4, if we end up with Mooney, Claypool, one free agent, and a round 3-5 rookie in the draft (as opposed to 2nd rounder).

A 2nd round WR in this particular draft class is probably pretty close to the top WR. It would be a shame if they dropped down to that 3-4 or later round range. Even if Poles is able to get a solid FA I'm hoping he still spends a 2nd round pick on a WR... especially in a trade down scenario.

There's a ton of scenarios in which EQ could end up being cut. It doesn't just have to be your scenario. How do you know a rookie drafted in rounds 3-5 won't outperform him? What round was Mooney drafted in again? We have no idea how the draft will unfold and who will fall where. I want Poles to draft good players...no matter what round it is. Hell...Poles could go out and sign 2 free agents that are a hell of a lot better than EQ and he'll get cut.

That’s all true. The case I was referring to is where Poles makes a relatively unsuccessful and/or weak attempt to upgrade the WR position. They would not have given EQ a new contract, if they did not envision a world wherein he remains on the roster. I just hope they are not delusional about how limited this whole WR group is. If so, Poles may not pursue aggressively a trade for a veteran WR1 or draft a WR in the second round. This is one of the major things I’m tracking this off-season.

David, EQ's contract is a low money/low guarantees thing. It means nothing.

Why do you think they gave him a new contract?
Because teams need multiple receivers under contract and he was the only one of the "4 lost dogs" Poles brought in on the cheap who was any good.
It's a 1 year, $1.25m, $170K guaranteed deal. That's pocket change. It's "#4 or #5" WR type of money and, as Butkus said, he will be cut in a NY minute if he loses out to someone else in preseason and camp.
It means he's on the roster as a backup for 2023....unless something better comes along.
Frank Reich wasn't hired in Carolina cuz they want to re-sign Darnold. Panthers are going after a QB. If they call us, Poles needs to demand DJ Moore as part of the deal.

That is correct. And "nothing better" may come along, unless Poles gives the WR position some priority in a trade, FA, and the the draft. As WR4, I think Getsy's plan is to lead the league in rushing again and rotate him into the lineup a lot on running plays to block on the outside. He is a good blocker.

Any smart manager makes contingency plans. And yes...we all know you're tracking the team getting a WR.
