You hope in a teardown year to jumpstart the rebuild by finding a few young building blocks.
As painful as the Bears were to watch this season, I think Poles has done a good job so far of doing that. Jones, Sanborn, and Brisker will all be starters this September. Kyler Gordon will be too. That's a very good 1st draft right there, especially when missing a 1st round pick.
He did and this is why I have hope.
We all keep talking about FA, and the Draft, but we are missing another element and that is the UDFA. That will be a big impact on the Bears rebuild as well.
I can't believe Braxton Jones didn't miss a snap all season. That is truly remarkable. L think Jenkins shows incredible promise at RG, but I don't think he is going to hold up for the long haul. Jones might actually be here as a long term fixture.
Which is a good thing. The fact that he took a lot of snaps in the regular season is going to help him in his development long term.

Hopefully, Jenkins will get healthy and stay healthy. If not then part of our rebuild includes RG too. The only piece we really have right now is Braxton Jones. And even he needs to improve for this coming season. The other 4 on the offensive line are question marks for various reasons (including Whitehair who looks bad now too).
When some Bears fans talk as if we can forget the OL in this draft and FA, I just SMH. Want Fields to fail? Then just fail to support him this year with the top-tier OL and WR talent he needs to succeed here.

Sanborn was a UDFA. Jaylon Jones and Watts were decent depth guys as UDFAs too. Unfortunately, nothing I can think of on offense.

Offense? How can you not remember the anchor of our OL, the mighty C Sam Mustipher? Old "Turnstile Sam" was never drafted. Nor was his partner in crime, undrafted Lucas Patrick (aka "Glassman Patrick" out of Duke).

Poles hasn't found anything yet on offense except for BJones.

Getting Sanborn as UDFA is an indicator of how much the league depends on measuring how much the guy can lift or how fast he runs through drills, and how little on the guy’s instincts for playing football.
Generally, though, I consider UDFAs and cheap free agents as lost dogs. Hopefully, now that Poles is the richest GM in the league, he will curb his enthusiasm for taking in lost dogs. With this one exception, all they have done for him is crap on the floor to get us #1 in the draft.

I was just trying to be funny and joke a bit. But regarding UDFA's, I figure they can be very important to a team. Even if they are just solid backups, that is still important to a good team (team's need good depth too). And we all know that the Bears in past years have had some undrafted guys end up being great starters. There have been many over the years. I think one of my favorites was center Jay Hilgenberg, member of the '85 Bears team and a 7-time pro bowl guy. He gave us 10 fantastic seasons at center. So I'm not dissing Poles for UDFA's, but trying to make the point that I hope in 2023 he can invest his highest level resources into quality players to support Fields, our #1 greatest resource on the Chicago Bears.
LOL, and before someone tries to jump on me for this, hey, I am not saying "reach" for a player in the draft and over-draft talent. My hope is that in this draft Poles can make a thoughtful move with that first round pick, trade down, and have high round picks that can draft offense to support Fields. If a D guy is clearly the BPA then sure, draft that guy. Don't draft an O guy just to be drafting an O guy. I hope you guys give me SOME credit for understanding how the draft should work :-)
