No...you made a definitive statement. Now prove it. Put up or shut up. They've played probably the two best running teams in the league. But you go ahead and prove your statement.
Statements about the future are not provable in the present. Wait. You will see. Not every team will beat them as bad as the Packers did, but this is going to be a big problem against any team that can run the ball.
You made the statement "He brought in bad tacklers"...how is that a statement about the future? Explain away that one.
The rest is you just throwing crap at a wall and hoping something sticks.

Hicks is past his prime by several years and spends most of the season on the trainer's table. Great player in 2017-2018. Not so much now. Goldman hasn't been good since 2019 and stopped being motivated. He RETIRED. Nichols was decent but hardly special and was a better fit for a 3-4 than the 4-3 the Bears were moving to.
Poles will have plenty of money to sign a good DL in FA and add another via the draft. We are in year 1 of a rebuild. Next offseason is when he can first really add some assets. I don't expect the defense to be anything better than middle-of-the-road this season.
I know all that. Injuries or whatever, these guys are still better football players than the guys Poles brought in to replace them. That’s how I see it. No, butkus, I can’t “prove” it. We’ll see what he’s able to do next year. If he invests what’s needed in the front-7, which is a lot, I predict people around here will still be complaining that he’s not doing enough with the offense to help Fields. He’ll be trying to pull two rabbits out of his….hat.
Well you need to figure out how to prove it, or stop making ridiculous statements.
How good can a player be when they can't play for a month?
How good can a player be when they're FREAKIN RETIRED???!!!
Bilal Nichols has 4 tackles this season...who's he better than?
We have $100 mill in cap space next off season...how many defensive lineman do you think we're signing? And why do you have all of them making $15 mill plus?

My explanation is that I never said that.

With all the focus on Fields, we haven’t said much about the defense. Bears rank #12 in defense and 18.5 scoring defense. We rank #7 in pass defense and DEAD LAST 32nd in run defense, giving up 189 yards per game. Teams are going to run all over us this year. That was caused by Poles.

I'm not worried. Yet. Game 1 was in a heavy rain, cutting down on the passing. Game 2 was because of horrible tackling. That can be fixed.

It is not fixable because of the guys he brought in. This is all on Poles.
YOU said the tackling is not fixable because of the guys Poles brought in. YOU said he brought in bad tacklers. Now PROVE it.

I did not say he brought in bad tacklers. I said he brought in bad run-stoppers who are losing the battles in the trenches. You can be a great tackler but if it’s after the runner has already gained 5 yards, you are not a run-stopper. You can teach a guy to be a better tackler (that’s fixable). You can’t teach a guy to be as big and strong as Hicks. We need a couple immovable defensive linemen, and we don’t have them.

1. Trey Lance can play for a month without getting injured. So can Hicks. There’s a difference between “didn’t” and “can’t “.
2. Goldman retired because he didn’t want to play for the Falcons. That doesn’t mean he would have quit on the Bears, if Poles allowed him to play. If he didn’t want to play for the Bears, he could have retired when Poles got rid of Hicks, Mack, and Nichols. He didn’t.
3. I am not nominating Nichols for the Pro Bowl, but he was a good player for the Bears. The Raiders wanted him, and he’s a starting tackle.
I don’t expect Poles will pay $15 million to every defensive lineman. But he needs both DL and LB. He might trade either Quinn or Smith. The whole front-7 picture is unclear.

I'm gonna make this as clear as I can:
Goldman sucked after covid. He clearly had lost his interest in playing football. He RETIRED subsequently. He wasn't going to be a good player for the Bears in 2022, even if he hadn't retired. And you can't prove he "didn't want to play for the Falcons". That's just your own speculation.
Hicks had been in decline for a few years and was nowhere near the player he had been in 2017-18. He's also aging and now frequently hurt. You can't be a "good player" always on the injury list which is exactly where he is right now with another team.
Trevathan is more of the same except he's not playing anywhere now. Nichols fit better in a 3-4 and he's no star.
I don't know what else to tell you. You are projecting what these players used to be at their best in 2018, not what they were last season or what they are now. Only Mack was a significant loss.
