7 years is more than enough time. A good GM can turn over the bulk of the roster in 3 years. Heck, a good one can turn over the bulk of the roster twice in 7 years. And remember that virtually all new GMs inherit a crap team so that's no excuse at this point. Teams don't can their GM when things are hunky-dory or "looking up".
For me, it's not a letter grade for GMs. It's purely binary. It's a Pass-Fail grading system. Either your GM builds a quality team (talking players and coaches here) that is a real contender or knocking on the door to becoming a real contender in 3-4 years or he doesn't.
There's no "in between". And you don't get credit for a few 5th round finds when you have whiffed on so many 1st and 2nd round picks.
And when you own an NFL team that will be valid.
Actually it is valid no matter what. If ownership is content to be "average", that's all you will be. Based on last January's garbage press conference when McCaskey tried to sell "good collaboration" as a proxy for actual GM-HC accomplishment, Bears ownership grades on a curve.
You don't win championships and be in perennial contention for championships by settling for "ok".
That isn't b/c of the players JABF, that is the bc the coaches are putting them in positions to fail. Look no further then ARob and Monty and their struggles. You know those are good players, Mooney was ascending last year and has been neutered this year.
Nagy wanted to prove his system worked, and he scapegoated Mitch last year, and even Foles said it was a problem. You are seeing again this year the same problem; and you got it on full display yesterday.
The system DOES NOT WORK. The Reid system works w/a stud OL, a stud TE, a stud WR and a really good 2nd wr and RB and an above average to great QB. If the system needs all that to work, then it's not the system its the players. The difference between KC and Chi is we don't have all stars in those positions, that doesn't mean they cannot play, it means they cannot play THAT system. A simple west coast play action system can work here w/the current players, you saw it last year; but Nagy won't do it, his ego is in the way.
I'm not even disputing what you are saying here. I'm actually acknowledging it.
Which leads to the bigger question I've been talking about since last November--WHY ARE NAGY AND PACE STILL HERE? Why weren't they shown the door when the Trubisky era ended in January? Cuz ownership is too cheap?
If you can't trust your HC to develop your rookie 1st round QB, then why the hell is he still your HC? And if you can't trust your GM to oversee all that, then why the hell is he still your GM?
If Pace's job was to get Nagy the personnel he needs to run "his system", then he has failed miserably to do so. Bears O roster is mediocre at best in terms of talent.
If Pace's job was to get a HC who can adapt to and maximize the roster he has, then he has failed miserably there as well.
Put it this way: Pace needs to place a call to Nagy TODAY and tell him to turn play calling completely over to Lazor. It's an order, not a request. If Nagy resists, he should be relieved immediately and Lazor named interim HC. I'm amazed Ryan Pace has kept his job as long he has (too long) but if he has any hope of not going down with the SS Nagy, this is his only play left at this point.
I have been saying this for 2 years. Why doesn't Pace or Phillips ever listen to us?

Pace must have naked pictures of McCaskey cavorting with Thai hookers or something because they seem to love and trust him despite producing only one winning season in 7 (so far).
It must be nice to have a boss who's unwilling to fire you despite you sucking for 7 years. I want a job like that.

No it isn't, b/c there is no standard for a person or company on what is and is not acceptable. It's only valid to you and those that might think like you; but if you don't own any stock in the situation its meaningless.

Look no further than President/CEO Ted Phillips to see how "The Family" allows inept people to stay here. Here's his Wiki:
"The organization recognized Phillips work and effort and placed him in position to improve the club. Phillips was named the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Chicago Bears on February 10, 1999"
The teams have mostly underperformed under Phillips tenure as President/CEO. Doesn't mean squat to the McCaskeys. Just coin the money from the rube Bears fans.
The family is coining money off this team bigtime, no matter how bad the teams have been. The value of the franchise has increased dramatically in just the last 5 years (to $3.5 billion now). Here's the formula. When fans get crazy angry they will eventually throw them a bone and fire a HC. Then get another stiff to coach and continue to laugh all the way to the bank with the money the family makes of this cash-cow franchise. It's quite a laugher for the family. Just cycle through the coaches and it's all good. Pace will probably keep his job here to mismanage the team for more years. He'll hire another deadbeat HC and call it all "good" and tell us how important it is to "collaborate" with George & the McCaskeys... whatever THAT has to do with the franchise is beyond me.
I honestly thing they put a VERY low value on having a solid GM who can build a winner here in Chicago - because the money flows in no matter what crap they have leading this team. That's just the history here since the McCaskey's took over running the team from George Halas.

I "liked" this post. Because I hate it. Because it's truth.

I get the frustration. Ownership aren't "football guys". That would be ok if they hired a good Director of Football Ops or even a really good GM but they haven't been able to do that in a long time. My guess is the McCaskeys simply don't have the NFL connections that other franchises do.
I have no doubt that George wants to WIN. I just think he doesn't know how to find the right Football Guys to assemble a great team. And I think he, probably with Ted heavily involved, sometimes makes shortsighted decisions on GMs and HCs because he doesn't want to spend the extra money on overlapping contracts. So they ride out failures (Fox, Nagy, Pace) too long.
