Heck, I remember Jerry Angelo putting together the 2006 Super Bowl team offensive line:
John Tait - Rueben Brown - Olin Kreutz - Roberto Garza - Fred Miller
That was an OL with a 1st team All-Pro, Olin Kreutz, who was on the NFL All-Decade team & 100 greatest Bears of all time.
Pro Bowler Rueben Brown.
John Tait was a 1st round, top-15 of the draft, pick and decent.
Garza was a solid as a rock OL for 14 seasons.
That was a decent OL.
I just remembered Garza a couple of days ago... Nothing fancy or flashy, but man how his pre-retirement C play would lift this interior
He was a grinder who put his heart and soul into the game. That OL wasn't epic great by any means. But it is what I'd like to see now, an offensive line that can take us to a Super Bowl like that OL did of John Tait - Rueben Brown - Olin Kreutz - Roberto Garza - Fred Miller. It was "good enough" to get us to the Super Bowl. A nice mix of All-Pro, Pro Bowlers, grinders and a solid 1st round LT.
Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith were far from perfect.
Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith made plenty of mistakes.
Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith needed to be let go due to the fact the Bears wanted to get better.
But we got worse. We watched some pretty good football back then. We won division championships back then. We won the NFC-Conference back then. We went to the Super Bowl back then. Now? Now we watch games like yesterday. We continually watch an offense that can't even play football at a professional level. It is horrific watching an offense that performs year-after-year that badly. This is "not okay" and the Bears can't spin this to make it seem okay. Pace and Nagy are not "better" than Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith. They have been given plenty of time to showcase that they can do their jobs. They have proven that they can't. Look at this team. Is this evidence of them having a clue? Not talking about yesterday, but rather the years that they have been here.
Has Pace given evidence he can build a Super Bowl winning team? No.
Has Nagy given evidence he can coach a Super Bowl winning team? No.
Then why on earth should we keep these guys around for more years of futility? The sooner we get a GM and HC in place here who CAN build a winner, the better. In hindsight it should have happened at the end of last season. Some here advocated that and I didn't. I was wrong and they were right. I watch these young ascending teams now and realize that THAT could be us -if- we get people in place who can truly build a great team. But it won't happen if the Bears don't get the RIGHT people in place here. Pace and Nagy can't get us where we need to go. The Bears had it right firing Angelo and Lovie. Unfortunately, they didn't bring in the right people after that. Now they need to get it right. Time to move on.
