This is behind a paywall so I can only post a brief snippet here. FWIW, The Athletic is offering 50% off on a subscription. It's a great source (I think) for worthwhile Bears news.
Regarding Dalton. I think the Bears think that he's good enough to start until Fields is ready to be the starter. Regarding that bold print below, I just don't know if the O run game can do much with the run-blocking that we have. The OL run-blocking looked worse to me than the pass protection. If the run game isn't there, then it's going to be a tough go for Dalton I think.
LINK Dalton is going to get his chance to prove Pace right on the field in less than two weeks against a pretty good Rams defense.
Offensive players have been impressed by Dalton. Sometimes you can tell if players are just talking or actually believe in someone. And yes, they see that Fields is special, but there is a confidence that Dalton carries that his teammates have noticed.
The problem is expecting that to translate to a regular-season game for a quarterback who, even at his best, was still not a top-10 signal caller in the league, and someone who struggled last season. The key to success early on is for Dalton to avoid turnovers and get a lot of help from the run game, receivers after the catch and his defense. That’s what worked in 2018 and for a few other average quarterbacks to come through Chicago. That said, they didn’t have a future franchise QB with rare traits as their backup.
Talk to me after you have seen the Dalton-Nagy 3-&-out offense in action.
If the Bears OL can't run block any better than what we have been seeing, then there will be not much of a run game. If that happens then Dalton is going to have a tough situation in games. Team will just tee-off and hammer the crap out of him. And you're right. We will see endless 3-and-outs. It will basically be an ugly offense like we've been seeing.
This team MUST have decent run blocking and run game - or else it's a house of cards. It's all collapsing on offense. I can see Dalton going down early this season with injury too. He's gonna take horrific physical beatings in games.
BUT, if on the other hand, this OL does show they can open holes for Monty, then that will help Dalton immensely. It's funny... because I worry more about this OL run blocking than pass protecting.
I think all Bears fans are being overly critical of Dalton and the OL. Much of it is absolutely warranted. The OL underwent a seemingly botched facelift and Dalton ... Nuff said, right? The guy was considered the bar for average for how many years?
That said, it's been how many years since the Bears have had a steady average QB?
As for the OL, they need time together. Preseason they looked all out of sorts, which makes sense since the LT position was completely up in the air until Peters was signed and he still needs to inspire us in a Bears uni.
I'm not pressing the panic on the OL until after week 2 or 3.
