I know they ran a 4-2-5 on a good % last year but wouldn't a base 4-3 require new personnel? Unless you are targetting Nichols & Goldman as the tackles plus Mack/Quinn as the ends with their hans in the dirt. Then Smith becomes the "Mike"?
Almost every NFL sportswriter says teams play nickel most of the time. The distinction between the 3-4 and 4-3 is not as important anymore IMO. I think (and I'm likely wrong) the 4-2-5 was an attempt to bring another DB on the field, while counting either Mark/Quinn as a standup DE. At the start of the season we saw DannyT and RSmith as the LBs, when DannyT got exposed as too slow Pagano begain using DBush as a LB during passing situations.
The Bears pretty much rushed 4 every play (yes there were times they didn't everyone know that....), even when Quinn or Mack dropped into coverage. I don't agree with Quinn or Mack dropping into coverage as much as they did because on their skill set, pass coverage is down the list (like my being able to dribble with either hand), but the concept of a zone blitz (which all teams do) means that sometimes you try and drop a DE/OLB into a passing lane or zone that the OFF isn't expecting. It happens, I don't like it, but it happens.
Brad Biggs was on 670AM this morning and was asked if the Bears might be considering a switch to 4-3. He essentially said it's a possibility, but he thinks they are still better set-up for the 3-4 as their base and would more than likely stick with it.

I don't think its a big deal. Most teams play nickel as their base, and then switch between the 3/4 or 4/3 on running downs and the dime on passing downs. I believe there was a game that the commentators pointed out a number of times on running downs that the Bears switched to a 4-3 instead of a 3-4. They also played a lot of 4-2-5 as well as a 5-1-5 at times. Its all situational football today. Bears have run stoppers and pass rushers all long the DL depending on the situation. Before Bush got injured he was playing ILB in passing situations and DannyT was coming out.
Fans like to chatter about the 3-4 v the 4-3, but its becoming meaningless from a strategic standout.
If they do "switch," they'll need another stand up LB (Hillenmyer's position because I think Smith would be Briggs) and some of the DT/DEs would be cut/moved.
Switching to a 4-3 also allows you to let Hicks go. Goldman and Nichols can man the inside.
Sounds like the perfect solution.
Creates cap space and already has the pieces in place.
Quin can finally go back to what he's good at. ( Maybe get 6-8 sacks this season for him ) Mack already shown he can be an all pro at that position with the Raiders
