Chicago Bears rookie WR Daniel Braverman still adjusting to the pro game By: Bryan Perez | 10 hours ago
When the Chicago Bears drafted Western Michigan wide receiver Daniel Braverman in the seventh round last April, it was expected that he’d have a steep hill to climb in order to make the active roster. According to receivers coach Curtis Johnson, the five-foot-eight pass-catcher is still climbing that hill.
“Braverman is a guy with short-area quickness that, I’m telling you, it’s phenomenal,” receivers coach Curtis Johnson told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He just needs to continue to work and continue to understand the pro football game.”
According to Johnson, Braverman is still learning the intricacies of learning how to play the position in the NFL, from route-running to identifying coverages. Until recently, receivers typically experienced one of the longer learning curves of any rookie entering the NFL.
The 2014 draft — the one with Odell Beckham, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks and several others — has created unrealistic expectations of rookie wideouts.
It looks like Eddie Royal’s injury-plagued history is starting to catch up with him once again, as he’s missed the last two games with a bum toe. We’ll find out soon whether the injury will linger into Week 10.
If it does, Braverman’s promotion could be coming sooner than later. Not only does Royal serve as the Bears’ slot receiver — the position that Braverman is expected to play in the NFL — he also contributes as a punt returner, a role that Braverman could cut his NFL teeth on.
After a training camp where Braverman stole the headlines on a daily basis, the time is now for him to put it all together and make the leap from the practice field to Sunday reps.
As valuable as Eddie Royal can be he also can't seem to stay healthy for 16 games so I'm really hoping we do have something special in this kid. We could sure use him.
I agree. Eddie is atm, no doubt, a much better wr, but as our season is not heading for playoffs and with all the injuries I think there is 75% that Royal will be cut next year. I dont see any reason why not to see what we got in Braverman and start preparing him.

Eddie's chances of returning to the Bears may be slim, but having him on the team for the first part of the year was excellent. Not only is he a good receiver (I'd say above average) but my addiction to pre-punt nail biting went away when I saw him getting ready to return them. We haven't had a confidence inspiring punt returner on this team FOR A LONG TIME.

Yep, I think you're right Alex. At his cost Royal it's at that stage where it's about diminishing returns due to age and injuries so it's time to get Braverman some playing time soon and evaluate him as a potential successor.

This is an incredibly negative 180 turnaround from pre season expectations when some (not all) were hoping for a great 3 headed monster. What a disarray this season has become. To now be realistic that Royal is a cut candidate and White may become a bust next year is reallz sobering but realistic. But the worst part may be how the situation with AJ pans out. He may want to really test FA after this season.

Sure. But ball is again in our court, it would be (too) costly but we can franchise him again, and with all that cap space it could be done. Maybe.

Can't say what the tag will be but it could reach 17-18M for WR's. It would be a really honest question to ask if AJ is in their plans but one could argue they just signed Kyle Long to 4 years going into his age 32 season.

Just a data point ... 2016 is the end of Royal's guaranteed money. He can be cut up to June 1 and we save his entire 2017 cap hit ($5 million).
