I dunno man. Pitt let Brown go because they grew tired of his attitude and they had JuJu ready to replace him with. Don't think we are in the same position as last year's 29th ranked offense.
Which is why it's best to see how the season goes along before making that decision. The only real risk is you may have to pay a little more. But that's better than just extending him and then finding out you don't actually need him that much.
The difference is AB had an attitude issue while ARob is more of a class act. JuJu was a reliable replacement while Miller is far from reliable. We haven't had a WR similar to Arob since Brandon Marshall of 2013. I don't want this team going back to the 2015-2017 era. Some very bad or injury prone WR's on that list.
What makes you think that ARob and his agent wanted to get this done right away and lose money? If you know it was going to cost ARob a few mil you don't think his agent didn't know?
Did anyone expect Houston to trade Hopkins away and then him to be made the highest paid non-QB in the league?
Ya the Texans. That doesn't mean anything though, The reason Hopkins was traded away was b/c he was going to cost to much, even if he did deserve it. His agent's job is to make sure he gets paid top dollar, and unless Hopkins states specifically he's staying in Houston(not likely) then his agent's job is to get the deal from the highest bidder. he did that.
Same thing w/ARobs agent. ARob can say he wants to be in Chicago all he wants, but he isn't accepting the offer given to him(if he's been given one). And his agents job is to make sure he gets the biggest deal he can, that means you wait to see how the other WR's get paid, which is exactly what they did. It's also not uncommon for the Bears to wait to sign players, even the good ones until TC/pre season. We are essentially still in pre season mind you, in terms of the time of month in a normal year.
Who you trying to convince? No one on this site disagrees. But that doesn't mean the Bears do, right or wrong. I'm trying to look at this from their point of view on why they might not be working to get this done like most assumed they would.
Those reasons, right or wrong(and I think they are wrong) are Miller, Wims, Ridley can do what the possession WR can do in an O that really features a TE and speed WR. From a contract and cap situation they might feel that ARob is worth more then they can afford to spend on what should end up being the #3 option in the passing game.
Or maybe they are trying to work on getting the contract done, and Arob and his agent are asking for more then he is actually worth; most agrree he doesn't deserve top WR money, and probably closer to top 5-10. We really don't know any information on the situation. If that's what he wants, can they even afford it? they can this year, but what about the next 4?
Wims and Ridley are not capable replacements for Arob. Heck Miller and his injury history isn't one either. Everyone likes to talk about the fact that Mahomes had great weapons around him to succeed. If we keep Mitch or get a new rookie don't you want him to have similar talent around him? Getting rid of Arob does nothing but weaken this offense.
They don't have to be, they won't be the primary targets. They just have to be able to get open when The TE and/or the speed WR's don't.

Worst case he will have made 42M in 3 years and you can apply the FT next season if absolutely necessary. At 17-18M he will have made nearly 60M if we go this route, all by his 28th Bday.

In this O the TE/speed WR are the primary targets, not the tall possession guy. The Bears might well be looking at Kmet/Rooney/Miller and then Wims/Ridley as their future targets, none of which are going to have the cap hits that ARob will have. Again look at all the draft capital at WR that has been spent since ARob was signed; Miller/Ridley/Rooney/Wims. a 2(plus the trade up) a 4 a 5 and a 7 in 4 straight years, plus another 2nd rd TE in Kmet (Shaheen). You could say Wims is a throw away, but he's stuck so far, and the team can afford for one of he or Ridley to not make the team.
The Bears are stacking the passing options w/or w/out ARob. Again I would keep ARob and let Miller/Ridley/Wims walk, but I'm not the one dealing w/the future cap ramifications.
He shouldn't need to answer if he asked for one, his agent flat said it didn't happen.
He has been pretty consistent w/wanting to stay; and he deserves a contract for his value; the question becomes can the Bears afford to pay him that, and do they see him in this O as having that value.

I get this sentiment but aren't the Bears $9M under the cap this year and couldn't this be used towards ARob rather than just staying in the McCaskey's silk pockets?
I am also curious how it works for the cap for players that opt out like Eddie Goldman any cap space here?
Also, the league has been setting a standard for paying their most valued ahead of their final year (Adam Thielen, Amari Cooper, Cooper Kupp, Keenan Allen) and I'd take Arob over any of the aforementioned.

Dhop got traded cause Houston has a stud QB that was on his rookie contract that they still needed to pay! 😅 Wouldn't that be a kick in the groin if Pace was holding back on paying Arob so he could give Mitch a bundle of cash?!

There is a long history here of bad offenses. There is a history here of not providing QBs top-tier supporting talent. There is a history here of QB failures and busts. Regarding our O talent we sometimes do get a really good player, but we don't get enough of them. And letting a proven good one walk is a bitter pill to take. It's like we never get ahead. One step forward and one step back. And on a personal note, us fans put up with some mighty crappy Bears teams and still remain fans, but when we can't even keep our best player on offense it just makes you want to throw in the towel on the franchise. Where was the money-management here? Did they think they'd NOT have to come up with some real money to keep a real player? You see a lot of money wasted here and there over the years. Robinson, at age 27 would have been a foundation piece on this offense. Something to build upon with the young guys who we "hope" will be good on O. If we are back to the draft for a new QB next year, wouldn't it be great to "finally" bring in a kid with some real talent to support him from Day-1? And what the heck are they thinking... you don't build a championship offense "on the cheap" nowadays.
I get it that the Bears may not have the money. But surely they could have managed the cap to keep their #1 weapon on offense.

If Pace re-signs Mitch this offseason to a multi-year deal, I'm gonna lose my shit. (It would take Trubisky having an All-Pro year to convince me otherwise.)
The decision tree for me with Trubisky is: FT or Move on
That's it. Even if Mitch has a good year, shows improvement, and stays healthy, he won't have done enough yet to make a 4-5 year, huge-money commitment to. You FT him and make him prove that 2020 wasn't just a fluke first.
