The key to energizing Bears wide receivers and defensive backs at training camp? An ‘authentic’ WWE championship belt, of course. By Colleen Kane - August 19th, 2020
Chicago Bears wide receivers coach Mike Furrey raised the WWE championship belt into the air in victory Tuesday morning on the back field at Halas Hall and noted he would prefer it polished the next time he picked it up from the defensive backs.
From the opposite sideline, safety Eddie Jackson shouted a couple of jabs back at the coach.
It was a lively end to the daily training camp competition Furrey and secondary coach Deshea Townsend concocted this offseason to create a pressure-oriented environment for players. The Bears have limited time to get ready for the season opener Sept. 13, and while most of practice remains in business mode, they’re not opposed to having a little fun while preparing.
I had a lot of respect for Furrey as a player. I remember him as a guy who gave crazy effort all the time. He was undrafted and spent his first years in the XFL and the arena league. But once he got his shot in the NFL he was a grinder who fought and clawed his way into a roster spot and a nice career. He was one of those guys who played against the Bears that you HAD to grudgingly respect. He was one gutsy guy. He may be exactly what we need for our WR corps. We just need a QB who can deliver the ball to the receivers... hope Mitch or Foles can be that guy.
