Okay so reading around, I'm still not a fan of this contract, 5mil is still to close to the middle for me(its top 20) for a guy that is clearly quickly aging/done. But up until last year he was a top 10 in receptions the previous 3 years.
Maybe the Bears just want someone reliable, ie won't get hurt and can actually get open while their draft pick learns the position(TE is notoriously hard to adjust from college to nfl).
Got to wonder what this means for Burton/Shaheen. Burton likely stays b/c 7+mil dead cap, but Shaheen is only 600k I could see the team moving on from him for a new 2-4th rounder.
The lack of FA movement by Chicago, and then this very odd/small contract move makes you wonder how tight up against the cap they are, maybe they aren't willing to cut Floyd to free up the cap necessary to make big moves.
Crazy how some people will try to defend every single move done by this organization. Pace has been the GM since 2015. It’s HIS team. As of today, his record is 34-47 and just one playoff game, so he’s literally done more bad than good. Can he still become a great GM? Of course, and I sure hope so. But let’s not pretend that he’s done a great job overall so far.
And quite frankly, always blaming everything on your predecessor is such a lame excuse, whether it’s in sports, or politics, the economy, your relationship or whatever.
Pace didn’t inherit Fox, he chose Fox. He didn’t inherit Glennon, he chose Glennon. See where I’m going w/ this? I could go on and on and on.
Loving every single move by the Bears doesn’t make one a better fan.
OL and TE are by far our team’s biggest weaknesses. The TE position has been abysmal for years, so I don’t get that move AT ALL. That’s not me being a hater, it’s me making an observation. Graham hasn’t done anything since NO and now all of sudden he’s supposed to come back better than ever?
You don’t need to be an NFL executive to know this was a waste of money that could’ve been used elsewhere.
Who's saying they love this move or making excuses? I haven't seen anyone do that here.

I'd be shocked if Shaheen was still on the team Sept. 1st, no matter what. Graham or no Graham. He provides nothing when healthy and he's rarely healthy on top of it.
Well after looking at this the CAP should be minimal this year. I am thinking like 4M 2020 & 5M 2021:
2020: 1.5M salary & 5M SB. 4M CAP HIT 2021: 2.5M salary. 5M CAP HIT
So he's isn't cut-able until after year 2, not without taking a $2.5m dead cap hit.
Not sure MP, just throwing sh* at the wall. Depends on how the guaranteed money is structured but really at the end of the day 4.5M AAV guaranteed isn't terrible. Hell if you get something like 30-35 receptions based on 50 targets, & 3-4 TD's he will have paid for himself the 1st year. Time will tell.

I don't see it either honestly, if Burton is healthy and you have Graham, there is no spot for Shaheen; you have 2 h-back TE's in the udfa lawfirm. Cut Shaheen and draft a TE in the 3rd-5th(if they trade back in the 2nd) Regarding the potential cap hit, I think anything under 5mil is cuttable unless you are really cap stressed, which the Bears well could be.

Bingo ^^^^
You catch flak around here for criticizing Ryan Pace as though its a sacrilege. Strange, huh?
I give him credit for rebuilding the defense. He has had some FA successes and some real busts like most GMs. I liked his aggressiveness in getting Mack, who would have been the cornerstone of a SB winning team....if Pace hadn't utterly f'd up the QB pick.
Now on to the not so good stuff.
He had 4 straight top-10 picks when he got here and busted 2 of them completely. One other is a decent player who isn't a difference maker despite playing a high-impact position. The 4th is a ILB who shows promise but doesn't really tilt the field. He also spent a mid-2nd round pick on a guy from a no-name tiny school who's college competition was against players who are now all accountants, actuaries, and marriage counselors. Needless to say, that one busted badly too. We STILL don't have a reliable TE.
Pace is the 6th year of his "rebuild" and has put up only one winning season and zero playoff wins. And we STILL don't have a freakin' QB.
Jimmy got paid too much. I'm sure that has a little something to do with the CBA, idk. I fully expect his contract to be dumpable after the 2020 season.
I'm not mad because Trey's biggest problem last year seemed to be availability, correct? Graham should fill that. Graham grades out as an average run-blocking TE. Not great, but versatile enough to play both the Y and U TE positions.
I also don't see this preventing the Bears from grabbing a TE in the draft. How many TEs did they carry last season?
Between the Graham signing in the Demetrius Harris signing definitely happier with the Harris signing. Neither count against the compensatory pick calculation which Pace is doing okay right now with NickK and NickW getting signed. KPL seems to be headed to a decent payday too.
That's pretty much how I feel about it. No, I'm not thrilled. But life on planet earth, as we know it, will go on after this signing. FWIW, Brad Biggs had this comment: "it’s not as if a commitment to Graham will have long-lasting effects on the roster, and with the notable exception of the Burton deal, most of Pace’s free-agent contracts have given the Bears quick outs when needed."

It gets old
I can't speak for others, but I only give flak when people criticize irrationally. Has he been perfect? Nope, and I nor others ever said he was. But to say he's been bad overall? Thats just silly.
