1 I thought we stopped paying attention to the NFL top 100 yrs ago, I did around 5 yrs ago.
2 no one, including me was unhappy mack was on the team, or questioned his talent. it was never about the player, it was the combo of picks and cap space that was going to hamstring the team later, which is going to start effecting the team next year and the year after as they have 5 mil in cap space next year, and no space tbe year after that
The cap has been going up around 10 million per year for the past few years. Sure we might have to let go average talent to pay for Mack we got a top 3 player in his prime for around half a decade.
You need talent to win games. Talent cost money. Every good NFL team supposedly has a cap hell period but most find a way out of them.
MOTM we are going to be losing very good players over the next few years b/c of the cap. an extra 10mil isn't going to keep the players that need re signed next year, not to mention some of that will go to the rookie pool. We went over all this in the Eddie Jackson thread. It gets rougher the year after that. Good players are going to have to be cut/replaced and walking away from early round picks makes it harder to replace said talent.
Everyone knows you need talent to win games, the key is to draft the vast majority of said talent so that you don't end up in a bad cap situation; and more importantly you need to stockpile said picks. Even then you still end up having to still end up letting good players go. The cap makes it impossible to keep all your good players, it makes it moreso when you go apeshit in FA for a couple years.
I am in the process of putting together a detailed post on the cap. I will put it on the future contract for Eddie Jackson thread as that is where most of the cap discussion currently resides.

It's not a science, but an art form and Pace seems to be juggling the player/money gig pretty well so far. Even the best GMs are going to make mistakes due to the fact these are human beings and not machines. I am encouraged that Pace has enough skill now (after being a GM for awhile here) that he can feed Nagy the talent needed to win consistently. But I so agree with you Ric, in that you can't keep everyone. Consistent winning depends on the GM/Coach and their skill level. I feel like we have one of the better GM/Coach combos in the NFL... at least they sure look promising at this point. They will both continue to make some mistakes. But they will make few, and learn from them and be better and better.

agreed, but we are going to see just how good he is in the next few years. He's got young players that need re signed coming up, Jackson, Floyd, Whitehair, Cohen; and Trubs. Some of that will come post CBA and that could help a ton, but that's like banking on the cap always going on up, it's not certain. He's going to have to start making really tough decisions, and it'll be harder b/c he no longer as the picks to guarantee he'll get the guys in the draft he needs to let vets go.
I have faith in him, but I think some fans are going to be shocked by the names that get cut/traded/released.
