The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Pace announced a contract signing on Friday. The team announced they've signed veteran tackle TJ Clemmings to a contract. Clemmings has played for the Vikings, Raiders and Washington over the last couple of years. The 27 year old has been given credit to Adrian Peterson's 1485 rushing yards back in 2015 which included 11 rushing touchdowns. In a corresponding move, the Bears have waived undrafted rookie guard Tommy Doles.

Arm length of 35 1/8". This guy's a top notch swing tackle. Can he play or stay healthy? No idea. Probably not. But with arms like that he can block from the trainer's table.

Clemmings is most likely the Vikings' worst offensive lineman of all time, if not of the more recent era (in the 11 years I've watched). He was a 4th round pick because of his great measurables and looked the part of a franchise left tackle, but he cannot play the position. Speed rushers run right around him, bull rushers plow through him, and he almost never had a good game. He was so bad the offensive coordinator had to game plan around his ineptitude.
However, this is just a 90 man roster move and it's unlikely Clemmings will make the 53 man cut. There aren't good offensive linemen available in free agency at this point in the season for good reason. If he somehow makes the team, pray he doesn't get to play. Perhaps he's improved since his first two years as a Viking... but you'd need some fairy dust to make this guy a good player.

damn, we let Tice go several years ago. His pixie dust might have worked wonders.
Serioulsy, a lot of these signings now are for training camp fodder. It doesn't hurt to kick the tires, unless you kick too hard...
Harry Hiestand must think he's worth bringing to camp or he would not have been signed. Still a young player too so maybe HH sees something worth working with here as a depth player.

Exactly my thoughts. The guy looks the part, has the measurables, maybe HH can unlock some potential. If not, it's a low risk move.

I'm still counting Sowell as an OL because that's what he is. He may line up occasionally as a "tight end" and perhaps catch a few passes on Nagy's freakish gadget plays during the season but he's an OL and the Bears swing tackle until proven otherwise.
Larsen is likely the swing G/C. The starting-5 are all but set in stone.
That leaves Clemmings and Coward to battle it out for the 8th OL spot. If we keep 9, they both likely make the team as "depth".
This signing is little more than competition for the bottom of the depth chart. No big deal

This guy's got 35+ inch arm length, and you're bringing up things like his ability to play the position. Bah. Everyone knows arm length is the #1 attribute of an offensive lineman. It's what made Frank Omiyale the player he was, with his Sasquatch-like 36 inch wingspan. Angelo was quite the scout to notice that diamond in the rough.
Okay, jokes aside, Omiyale was brought on this team during Hiestand's first stint with the Bears, and he plugged him in as a terrible guard.

I remember this guy being absolutely man handled by Pernell McPhee on the 2016 Bears win over the vikings. He was a converted DL I think and didn't have a clue how to handle a technician like McPhee.
May be they are bringing him in as a project for HH. But I'm not hopeful based on his time with the Vikings!

Maybe worst of all time but post knee surgery Nate Long who played opposite him would have given him a run for his money!
