Practice window for Pernell McPhee (PUP list) can open Friday ( Full title )
Per NFL rules, Chicago Bears outside linebacker Pernell McPhee can practice beginning on Friday and play the following Thursday at Green Bay in Week 7.
That does not mean McPhee's return is imminent. The veteran defender, on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), has been relegated to side work ever since he underwent offseason knee surgery.
McPhee has basically been off the radar in 2016, except for when he bumped and yelled at quarterback Jay Cutler after a costly interception in Week 2. Following the brief, one-sided exchange, Cutler promptly left the field because of ligament damage in his right thumb and has not played since.
When McPhee officially returns to the practice field, the Bears have 21 days to active him, or lose him for the rest of the year.
"We'll keep you guys posted," coach John Fox said.
Signed to a five-year deal worth $15.5 million guaranteed, McPhee showed glimpses of being a dominant player last year, finishing tied for second on the team in tackles for loss (10) and third in sacks (six). McPhee, who missed two games, was often slowed by a chronic knee condition, which the six-year veteran attempted to improve by having the offseason procedure.
For a team desperate for pass-rush help, the return of a healthy McPhee would provide the defense with a big lift.
