Anyone interested in posting a few thoughts? I recognize that this has the potential to involve elements of a political discussion, but perhaps we can simply accept that and not turn it into a spitting contest.
Here are my thoughts in no random order:
(1) As a former union member (CTU--don't throw things at me) I hope the players get more of the pie. They take the physical risk. I'd be interested in seeing a 55/45 player/owner split with things like better pensions, after game healthcare and other things maybe worked into the 55%.
(2) The owners make a lot of money...like a lot.
(3) I think the players will end up losing the PR battle because they will throw out the underpaid card, which won't go over too well with the general public.
(4) I don't see a player run league being a feasible option. I recognize that I could very well be wrong about this. No player is going to risk getting injured while playing the NFLPA League and ending his career. Beyond that what about: …..(a) contract stadiums have limiting outside usage during football weekends. …..(b) gate and concessions doesn't play player paychecks, its TV/Radio and other merchandising. Would the NFLPA League be able to set that stuff up to make it worth the risk to players (ie injuries) …..(c) who coaches and does trainer duties? Anyone working for he NFLPA League surely won't get hired in the NFL. …..(d) what hidden tricks do the owners have to stop such a league from operating?
don't care other then it not stop football if they strike fans will now be able to get their football fix from aaf and xfl and college this will be a bad time for them to go this route.
I really don't care about millionaires fighting with billionaires about who gets what. I don't feel bad for either.
players take the physical risk, but the owners take the financial risk. both if they are smart have planned for those risks. meanwhile I will never see that kind of generational wealth and I live by a general rule of if they are wealthier, healthier, and better looking then me I don't worry about them.

That is my attitude as well.
The NFL in general better lookout. If they go on strike or lockout, I will watch either the AAF or the XFL. At least the players from those leagues give a damn.
I may just give up football if that happens. I only really watch Da Bears anyway, and I have plenty of chores and hobbies to do instead. The game is changing too much as it is, I don't like the fantasy football approach that is making it tough on defenses to do anything. a strike might just be the straw that breaks this old camel's back.

This is really the issue the league and the NFLPA have to deal with and I'm not sure either group has the humility to realize it. they are both preparing for scorched earth warfare. In the big scheme of things (global warming, Ebola outbreaks...and the White Sox apparently being underneath the Padres on the "I want to play there scale") the NFL going on strike doesn't really matter. But the casual fan will drift away to other things to do. Sunday is my grilling day and while I'll watch anytime the Bears are on, I do find myself not tuning in on Monday/Thursday nights and if the Sunday night game isn't NFC-North I hardly watch. And I'm a crazy football fan (or I was I guess).
Both sides better be careful or a boxing-like future looms.

What else could happen is that we see a rise in alternative sports (like so-called sport called Soccer) .
If there is a strike, I hope they bring in replacement players (who really really want to play the sport) as they did in 87.

I will always side with the players, given their demands aren't too greedy. I think no matter the sport, they should receive half, if not a point or 2 more of the total revenue. They're the product, and the reason why millions of people like us love the league. We don't invest our time and money watching owners own a team.
I haven't heard much rumblings about a strike in football as much as I hear in baseball... For the most part I think the NFL does a lot of good things. Increasing the salary cap every year, allowing teams to rollover unspent money to the next season, etc. If a lockout needs to happen, it will really suck.
I'm not going to get my football fix anywhere else like the AAF or XFL. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise... It's the entry level caliber of professional football players. Maybe a handful of players are even considered NFL caliber players. You'll all see the difference in talent on the field and say **** it.

If you can watch college football and enjoy it, you can watch AAF/XFL, b/c while it's not the best of the best, it's still equivelent or better players.
