Why One Player May Not Be Happy with Bears Hiring Chuck Pagano By Erik Lambert - January 19, 2019
The Chicago Bears hiring Chuck Pagano was met with relative acclaim from most players, coaches, and media. While his head coaching run may not have made him many fans, there are plenty who still view the veteran coach as a top defensive specialist. If he maintains the same form he had in Baltimore, the Bears defense should be in good hands.
That said, there is one undeniable truth. They’re still in different hands. Pagano is not Vic Fangio. People cannot and should not expect him to run things exactly the same way it’s been for the past four years. Pagano has his own preferences and ideas about how a defense should operate and there’s no way they all fall in line with Fangio’s style.
"PAGANO’S PREFERRED TIGHT MAN COVERAGE SHOULD ELIMINATE SOME OF THE LAYUPS AND QUICK PASSES OPPONENTS ARE CREATING TO PROP UP THEIR QUARTERBACKS. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE ADDED PRESSURE WILL LEAD TO MORE SACKS, TURNOVERS AND NEGATIVE PLAYS.”

I'm very excited about Pagano's defense.
That was the big issue with Vic's defense. Hopefully, Pags can eliminate some of the weakness.

might end up looking at cb in the draft and FA, and to trade fuller then. fuller struggles with man and is definitely a better zone cover.

if we draft a guy to play man, fuller can play nickel. i like fuller with eyes on the QB and it would be a mistake to play away from his strengths, esp as he is great jumping routes with Jackson behind him.

This is why I keep saying that it will be interesting to see what Pagano does with Fuller. Interesting and very informative IMO.
Fuller does not seem to be a classic press corner. But he is legitimately an All Pro CB. IMO a resource you want to get the maximum use ad productivity from.
Assuming Pagano is as good a defensive coach as we've been lead to believe, he will do something very, very good with this. But we'll see. Not trying to be negative about Pagano, just cautious.

tragicslip Jackson makes a lot of things possible, but he cannot save an aggressive attacking front 7 from the dump off to a WR because the CB is laying off hoping for to jump a route. Moving fuller to the corner doesn't really help that; it just means he's getting beat by slants and posts b/c he's still 5-10 yards deep.
Was Nagy not a good HC/OC b/c he couldn't/wouldn't do anything w/Howard; or was Howard unable to adapt to a system most of the year and unable to find his place? This idea of the fungable coordinator just keeps going. If he's willing to keep things going and just tweek to be more aggressive as he said in his opening interview then they might well keep fuller; but it's hard to be aggressive and blitz when your CB is 5- 10 yards off the WR; it becomes an easy pass that you cannot stop. You cannot apply pressure and have your DB's laying off the WR's, its how teams broke the lovie 2, and how teams shut down all pressure based Def's.
A lot of this will depend on who is even available, no pick until rd 3 and limited cap is going to limit what they can do. They might just keep him out of necessity, but that doesn't mean he'll thrive like he did w/Fangio; or it will mean Pagano won't be able to be as aggressive as he would like to be.

i would expect they have Fuller blitzing from the slot at Nickle or dropping into zone and blitzing an ILB. i don't think Pagano will put Fuller in a bad spot and i guess time will tell. i've liked Fuller since VT so i am biased.

I liked him when the bears drafted him, but at this point we all know what he is, he's a zone CB, and it brings with it that limitation, just like Prince is a man cover, which has it's limitations. You don't normally have a guy that can do both.
