DeFilippo was at one time considered a contender for the Bears HC job.

John DeFilippo has been one of the most polarizing figures for the Minnesota Vikings this season as the offensive coordinator in his first year with the team, but they are pulling the plug on the experiment late in the season. The Vikings have fired DeFilippo after returning home from a 21-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14 on Monday Night Football. Kevin Stefanski, the team's quarterback's coach, will take over as coordinator.
DeFilippo was hired by the Vikings this offseason to replace Pat Shurmur, who left the team to accept the head coaching job with the New York Giants. DeFilippo spent 2016-17 on Doug Pederson's staff with the Philadelphia Eagles as the quarterbacks coach an drew rave reviews for his work with Carson Wentz and Nick Foles and won a Super Bowl with the team, coincidentally in Minnesota against the New England Patriots. Four days later, he was hired to the position with the Vikings. He also spent time with the Cleveland Browns as their offensive coordinator in 2015.
Stefanski had interest from the Giants, as Shurmur attempted to interview him for the job last offseason, but was denied by Zimmer and the Vikings. Now, the show is his as the team looks to make a playoff run.
After the Vikings' offense was seventh in rushing and 11th in passing last season under Shurmur, the team has taken a big step back this year. The Vikings currently are eighth in passing yardage, but are 30th in rushing despite a pair of talented backs in Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray.
Head coach Mike Zimmer was asked after the game in Seattle what the struggling offense needed to do to get back on track.
"Yeah, that’s a good question. Keep at it," Zimmer said during his postgame press conference. "Keep trying to find things that we’re good at. We didn’t score very many points tonight, didn’t score very many points last week. Part of it is being better on third downs, we haven’t really done a good job there. Part of it is being better in the red zone. Had the ball on the 2-yard line didn’t score. You keep doing things like that you’re not going to score many points."
Minnesota's offense has now lost the last three games that it has played against NFL playoff teams (Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Seahawks), they were only able to score 37 total points (20 of which came in the game against the Bears). With the weapons on the outside, the backs that they have and the investment the front office made in the quarterback position, that simply is not the recipe for success and it continues to haunt them and take steps back when it should be improving and peaking as teams hit their stride and they decided to make a change.
The next obstacle that awaits the Vikings is a home date with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in a 12 p.m. CT kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
