A week after Logan Paulsen was on the field for only 10 snaps in the loss at Dallas, the Bears got a lot of use out of the backup tight end and that led to a lot of variety in the personnel groupings for offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. I tracked the personnel groupings and in the non-kneel down plays (including those with penalties), I had Zach Miller on the field for 51 of 67 snaps and Paulsen in action for 44 of 67 snaps.
The Bears were in 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers) for 28 snaps by my count and Loggains did a nice job of mixing it up. There were 15 running plays (13 to Howard and two to Joique Bell) and 13 passes. Howard only gained 32 yards on 11 carries as two of the runs were wiped out by holding penalties on wide receiver Deonte Thompson and center Cody Whitehair.
But the Bears mixed it up and this commitment to two tights ends and running the ball didn’t take anything away from the productivity of wide receiver Eddie Royal. I had Royal for 37 snaps unofficially and he caught all seven passes targeted for him for 111 yards and one touchdown. Loggains did a nice job of keeping the Lions off balance and that might be one reason why Detroit’s defensive coordinator Teryl Austin had what appeared to be a vanilla look. He is usually pretty creative but there wasn’t a lot thrown at an offensive line that has struggled in previous games.Personnel groupings can really vary from week to week and game situations can dictate things change in a hurry. But for the Bears to play complementary football and really commit to running the ball and keeping their defense fresh, they need to go with more two tight end action moving forward. To keep opponents honest, Paulsen was targeted three times and caught two balls for 10 yards.
Which is easy to do when you aren't passing solely out of shotgun and running when under center. The Lions DEF is sooooo bad that while I am happy for the win, its hard to know how improved the OFF really was. I'm not knocking Hoyer, the OL or the play calling. They did their job and won the game. This season will still hinge on the OFF taking slack for the DEF. Next games look winnable as well, but at some point no matter who the QB is, they have to score more than 17 points.

I don't envy Loggains duties but I do give him some slack for getting things dialed in as a O. C. I honestly think he'll get better and better barring another injury fest.

I found the criticism of Loggains a little much so early on. Especially given that judging his play calling when the player's weren't even executing their jobs correctly. Coaches can't make the players make their blocks or hit the right holes. When one of your wide receiver's route running can be described charitably as a "work in progress" and certain members of the offensive line decide to take a smoke break on some plays there is only so much an OC can do.
Is he ultimately responsible for the offense's performance? Yes, but let's give him and the players some time to work things out before people demand he needs to be thrown out a window.

NO!!! Hot takes only, which is what powers the internet!!! Trade Cutler!! Trade Jeffery!! Trade Langford!! Fire Loggains !! Fire Fox....wait I'm behind that one (warning I suffer from irrational anti-Fox syndrome.)

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Lions were missing star players that game and we only won by 3 points. That's pretty sad that we couldn't do more against that Lions defense. If it wasn't for Stafford pulling a Jay Cutler they honestly might of won the game.
