Article after article after article... ad nauseum, talked about Pace being THE guy who pushed for hiring John Fox. Here's just one of a zillion articles of how it went down.
Now we have these "conspiracy theories" that poor Ryan Pace was forced to hire Fox. I'm not buying that for one minute. You can argue if the Fox hire was good or bad - but it was Ryan Pace who hired the man.
Ryan Pace is the GM of this team. These are his players. These are his coaches. I'm not saying the guy is totally responsible for everything bad that has happened in the draft or on the field. Not at all. But he is the GM.
“Ryan was terrific,” McCaskey said Monday after Fox’s introductory press conference. “He led us in the process, he was very open to questions and ideas from Ernie (Accorsi) as a consultant, but it was Ryan’s show, and he was very decisive in determining that John was the guy we wanted to go after.”
Make no mistake: Pace was the man in charge of landing Fox.
The process started with Pace quickly calling Fox as soon as word leaked that the Broncos would part ways.
Early last week, the Bears scheduled an interview with Fox — the only one he would conduct — and he was in town Wednesday, with Pace leading the questioning. Fox flew back to Denver after the interview, and Pace was on a flight the following day, ready to lock down the deal.
Pace and his wife, Stephanie, spent Thursday with Fox and his wife, Robin, for a more informal interview. On Friday morning, the contract was signed.
“He took the reins, he was the leader throughout the process,” Phillips said of Pace. “He was thoughtful and very decisive.”

Fair enough and here's my counter to it based on rumor, Ernie Accorsi's involvement, and precedent. You have to think from the inside out on this not the outside looking in which is what this is. The idea that they shoved Fox down his throat is overly dramatic and I never implied it happened like that. That was just the radio dramatization of it and I think we all know that. It's talk radio. It's intended to be provocative and overly dramatic. It's not a calm forum for debate or no one would tune in. It's DBS vs us.
First and foremost do you think you will ever read anything that ever says McCaskey announced the hire of Ryan Pace as the Bears new GM but admitted they persuaded him to hire John Fox as his HC? That'll never happen and Pace would not admit to it either because it would weaken his case the future.
I see two very real possibilities here this one being most likely so it's the one I'll go with.
Accorsi was advising the Bears, that we know. But Pace was also his recommendation for GM not Phillips' or GMcC's. So it stands to reason that he wanted Pace to interview well and get the job. Pace is young and has zero track record at a GM level. He wasn't even NOLA's top personnel guy and the Bears had just fired another inexperienced GM who wasn't up to the job. So to get them to accept Pace Accorsi has to do a selling job on two very conservative guys.
Accorsi's solution is to plant the idea of Pace the upcoming rookie paired with Fox the crafty old vet who was fresh off of four winning seasons and a SB appearance in Denver who can offset Pace's inexperience. Accorsi either presents this idea to Pace prior to his interview or he presents it to whoever else may have been coaching Pace as the way to win over Phillips and GMcC and Accorsi will back that as his own recommendation as well.
So while it may have come out as Pace's idea it as actually pre-packaged by Accorsi's thinking as the best way to get it done and it all happened very quickly. Almost too quickly to have not been some pre-planning involved. Or to put it really simply in some way Accorsi suggests Pace pitch them on Fox as his HC choice and he's sure he'll get the gig. A more experienced exec might have laughed at that suggestion if he had other ideas but Pace was not that guy and he wanted the job badly so he agreed without realizing what he might be getting himself into.
You can call that a conspiracy if you like but if you've been involved in as many interviews, selling jobs, and presentations as I have then we both know it's very often how things get done or not at all. Hell we've done this all our lives even with our own kids like, it's OK for 14 year old Tim to go to the party and stay out 'til midnight as long as older brother Todd is with him and kinda watches out for him. It's every bit as natural an occurrence in business too.

So.....that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
I do believe Pace would have respected Accorsi's opinion. But am I following you that you suspect Pace agreed to Fox in order to get himself the GM job? Maybe I misunderstood your post. But that couldn't have happened Soul, because Pace was hired as GM on January 8th, when John Fox was still the Denver Head coach preparing for the divisional playoff game with the Colts. Fox was thinking about a super bowl run at that point. Fox was fired on January 12th... just 24 hours after losing that playoff game. I don't think Fox was even on the Bears radar until he was out in Denver.
And once Pace had the GM job secured, it's not like the Bears were going to fire him after less than 1-week on the job, if he didn't hire Fox. But I do agree with you if you're saying Pace as a young guy, would have given Accorsi's opinion a lot of weight. That certainly seems reasonable to believe.
I'm not trying to be a jerk with all of this. I just keep coming back to believing Pace is the GM. These are his players. These are his coaches. This is his team. If he has hired a bad coach, that's not unforgivable, but he isn't blameless in all of this either.
He was on their radar because this entire town knew that whatever playoff game Fox finally coached here would be his last. We all knew Fox was a goner and and Kubiak was already on deck waiting for his turn at bat and few shed a tear over it. After that 43-8 trouncing most wanted him gone then but the one and done in 2014 was the final nail in his coffin. A SB win may have been all that would have saved him but it didn't come 'til Kubiak was in charge and Wade Phillips ran the defense more aggressively than Fox had eve done.
Neither of us can ever be 100% precise about any of it because we weren't there and my construction of the events may not coincide exactly with the timing of both hires and who told who what and when but I am saying Fox was always presented as part of the package. If he wasn't available of course they have to go a different direction but if I knew he would be, and 90% of this town did as well, then Accorsi knew it too. Todd Bowles was also available and the DCOY but if Pace wanted the job Accorsi had to convince him to present Fox not Bowles and quite possibly with some assurance that Gase might come along as well. I am also saying this was the plan before Pace was hired and Fox let go and it fell the way Accorsi planned for and hoped it would.
No, they wouldn't have fired him if he resisted Fox but he wasn't gonna do that because I'm convinced Accorsi put together a well crafted package and Pace bought into it to get the job. Looking at it that way then we do actually agree. Pace did pull the trigger but also of a gun that was placed in his hand. I'm also not blaming Accorsi because this is what he was hired to do nor am I blaming Pace for agreeing to it. Most young guys in that spot would have and God knows I had deals worked for me like that before too. I knew that all I had to do was present it as it was scripted and the board of directors would agree because they'd already been primed for it. It happens all the time.
I guess I'm just declaring my own personal war on Fox because IMHO HE'S the one who isn't delivering. I've stated my reasons for it and I'll keep doing it until something changes. That's just how I truly feel about it but I'm not about recruiting support for a Fire John Fox site either. LOL That's not my style either. I'm also glad we have a site now where long term brothers and friends can have diametrically opposing viewpoints and debate them as strenuously as we have without it impacting that friendship. That's what I hoped we'd get back to here like we could do at DBS before the reptilians showed up.

Doncha just love Suit Speak - " he was thoughtful and decisive " .
It's like there this book that all of them read about how to phrase things : " we've decided to move in a different direction " - " we're evaluating the situation " - " we're gathering facts and have no comment at this time " - " he has a dynamic personality " - " we want to diversify our options " - " it's a fluid situation " - " we can neither confirm nor deny " - " we will be making the necessary changes " ........
...... all always designed to give the impression things are under control ( when often they aren't ) . Hilarious .
