The Chicago Bears finalized their 90-man roster as they move forward into the offseason.
The team announced the signing of five players who participated in rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, and they released four others under contract to keep the roster at 90.
Defensive back Tyrin Holloway and offensive lineman Matt McCants are the newest names added to the list.
Holloway went undrafted out of Western Illinois. He can play cornerback or safety, and he registered 10 interceptions over his college career.
McCants was a sixth-round pick by the New York Giants back in 2012, and he’s bounced around the league, starting three games at right tackle for the Oakland Raiders in 2013. He had a brief stint in Chicago for two games of 2016, and now he’s back to add some depth at the offensive tackle position.
Linebacker Howard Jones was a surprise release in a corresponding roster move. He appeared in four games for the Bears’ defense last year, registering a sack against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14.
Chicago doesn’t have a lot of depth at outside linebacker, but evidently the Bears like the group they have and wanted to add other young players across the roster.

Yeah Jones and Lee a bit of a shock at this stage! Wonder why they kept them until now to release them already. Something to do with compensatory picks?

The other hard truth is that some of the OFF guys just cut were Loggains and the old OL-coach's guys. Nagy and the new OL-coach think they can do better. As far as the OLB, Fangio saw them last year and thinks that the rookies have a higher floor or a higher ceiling.
Most likely, Jones and Morgan were told to keep in shape, we'll call you. Some rookie is going to show up for camp 25 pounds heavier and he'll get cut, or he won't be able to adsorb the playbook the first week. He'll get cut and Jones will get the call.
