The Chicago Bears went all-in last offseason by acquiring the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to take quarterback Mitch Trubisky. This offseason has been all about helping the young quarterback, giving him a new tight end in Trey Burton and a pair of new wideouts in Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel in free agency and a new interior lineman in the second round of the draft in Iowa's James Daniels. But for Bears general manager Ryan Pace, that was not enough.
After taking Daniels with the 39th overall pick, Pace jumped back into the second round by trading a 2019 second-round pick and the 105th overall pick (fourth round) to the New England Patriots to move into the 51st overall spot. Even with pass rusher as a big need for Chicago, Pace identified Memphis' Anthony Miller as his guy and pounced on the talented wide receiver.
Miller is a dynamic wide receiver who put together impressive back-to-back seasons for the Tigers before declaring for this year's draft. Chicago is installing a brand new offense under head coach Matt Nagy and Miller knows he can offer up a lot of versatility for his new coach and for his new quarterback.
“I believe I’m very versatile, and I can play either one,” Miller said after he was drafted, via Pro Football Weekly's Bob LeGere. “But if I had a choice, I’d play the slot. I don’t think any safety or linebacker in the league is capable of holding me, especially with a quarterback like Mitch Trubisky. I believe we’re going to tear it up wherever they put me.”
Miller noted he would like to play out of the slot and his numbers at the collegiate level back up why he feels that is his best fit. According to Pro Football Focus, the quarterback recorded a 149.1 passer rating when throwing in Miller's direction when he was playing out of the slot. That was the highest number of any wide receiver in this year's draft. PFF also took a look at Miller's route tree and noted he is at his best when running the post with the quarterback racking up a 139.6 rating when throwing in his direction when running that route.
It is also interesting to note the enthusiasm Miller already has for playing alongside Trubisky in Chicago. The second-year quarterback was expected to sit and learn behind Mike Glennon in 2017 before the veteran quarterback struggled in four starts. Trubisky made his NFL debut in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, completing 12 of his 25 passing attempts for 128 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Arguably his best performance came in Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals when he completed 25 of his 32 passing attempts for 271 yards with one touchdown and a quarterback rating of 112.4. He eclipsed the 300-yard mark the following week but also tossed three interceptions to just one touchdown that afternoon.
In total, Trubisky completed 59.4 percent of his passing for 2,193 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Now he has an offensive-minded head coach who brings along a successful system, a complete wideout in Robinson, a pure deep threat in Gabriel and an explosive option out of the slot in Miller. On paper, it certainly looks like this offense is ready to "tear it up" in 2018.
