Jim the bigger question is why he hasn't he figured it out already. With the exception of two 15 yard runs he's averaged just 2.1 ypc on 26 others. This comes after averaging just 3.6 ypc in 2015. This is not the RB you want carrying the ball in a run oriented ball control offense so why has Fox even started him over tougher runners like Carey and Howard let alone stuck with him?
Now add that to White starting over Bellamy or Meredith who've outplayed him by a long shot in the preseason and can run routes with precision and Floyd starting over Houston until Houston went down and you have to wonder just how serious Fox really has been about winning vs simply playing those he wants to play over those who've earned more snaps. Go figure.
And some want to know why I'm laying two losses at Fox's feet?
This is my point about Slau, btw, he is gone b/c they wanted Whitehair and Grasu to play, and imo they knew those 2 couldn't earn a spot w/Slau on the roster; it's also why Forte is gone, it wasn't about a 30 yr old rb that was just a good excuse, it was about getting Langford starts which he couldn't get w/Forte clearly better then him. And for some reason they thought Miller was a legit starting TE; which he has never been, and is showing that this year, so off goes Bennett b/c how dare he want a better contract lets go w/Miller who is cheaper. Well there goes some substantial OL help b/c Bennett is a far better blocker on rush and pass, and a more legitimate threat in routes. by letting these guys go, and by not having the best players play(as you pointed out w/Houston and Bellamy/Meredith) they have destroyed the O performance.
Yeah Ric, Langford seems to have bulked up too much & lost his speed. He looks slow to me.
I don't think he's bulked up, I never saw the great break away speed everyone else did last year, he never had the burst Forte did his rookie year, and Forte was never a speed back. Go look at Forte's rookie season highlights while he was no burner he was still fast in the open field, Langford rarely showed that; much like white if he's fast it's not pads on fast.
People were so assured that Langford would get better this year, and I never got it, last year his numbers were miserable and he showed himself as a boom or bust rb, and that's all he is now. Right now this group of RB's couldn't hold a candle to Forte by himself; and there wasn't much of shot to begin w/when you looked at Langford and Carey as the primary backs.
This is also effecting the passing game, no def has to worry about these rb's and now they can soley tee off on Cutler, this is the primary reason Forte was an essential piece to this O he made the passing game work b/c defenses had to defend him first, he made the OL's job and the QB's job easier. No Forte, no worry of the rush, and Cutler and the passing game have regressed and the entire O is failing.
All you had to tonight was to watch how slick Dallas worked their play action holding the LBs and opening all that room for Prescott to throw downfield. The run blocking was awful again tonight. Jordan gained 36 yards on one run and 9 yards on 8 others. Langford gained 23 yards on one run and 8 on two others and Fox says he wants to run the ball? They nailed Jordan in the backfield so many times I figured they must have been playing offside most of the game.
They stopped the run and let Hoyer try to beat them with the pass and of course that didn't exactly make them sweat. Marinelli called a good defensive game and made us one dimensional just like he was supposed to. But I sure like Howard back there far more than I do Langford. To bad Goff didn't fall to Dallas. If they'd passed on Elliot we might have had a shot at him instead of taking Floyd who looks to me like exactly what I expected. One more SEC "tweener" OLB who can't play at this level.
Howard looked good tonight , and they're apparently looking at Langfords achillies ( which is never good ) so I'd bet we'll see alot more of him .
Just gimme Carey and Howard and screw Langford. Howard actually plays faster than he does.
Agree ... and he's obviously much more challenging to tackle cuz he's got huge legs and a bigger upper body . I've noticed several DB's who have looked sheepish about colliding with him .
