One has to wonder too if a guy like Nick Kwiatkoski was a Fox pick. Fangio seems to like linebackers who can play multiple roles so he can disguise coverage schemes and pressures. Nick couldn't really do that. Nick's lack of coverage skills forced Timu, Jones and Anderson onto the field. The more I think about this pick, the more it makes sense and the more it makes me realize that a lot of the defensive players the Bears added were Fox guys who Fangio was forced to scheme around. Makes me wonder how many of Fox's defenders are still on the team and how that may become a liability.
I could not agree more!
I read everything I could find about how the Bears were approaching this draft. My initial motivation was to see how the new Nagy led coaching staff would work. But I ended up seeing differences on how this draft went as opposed to last year's draft. And I ended up really looking at how Pace was operating without Fox as the HC.
As I said in another post, IMO Pace wants to operate very collaboratively with his scouts and with the coaches. Operating like a team. That came through in little bits in pressers and in some of the news articles. Contrast that to the charade of the selection of Trubisky last year. With Pace operating in secrecy, possibly keeping Fox totally in the dark until the last minute.
So I think the first of the two sentences I highlighted about Fox having defensive selections forced on Fangio could have been more than we thought. And as to how many are still on the team, my guess is that if they are not as adaptable as Fangio likes they may not be on the final roster this year. And all gone by 2019 for sure.

I don't agree at all that he lacks coverage skills. He play Safety in college before being converted to LB and he surely handled coverage better than Timu and Jones.
I agree that his forte is as a downhill "Mike" ILB but it's not as if that's all he can do. But then if you have ILB who can run with WRs why not use them in coverage?
That said we didn't draft Smith to see him sit. I expect him to start alongside Trevathan with Kwiatkoski as the next man up ILB. Pace did draft him and Fangio would have had a vote then too.

He played safety, true. He has struggled in coverage and has been pulled because of those struggles. He doesn't match up well with tight ends and he struggles in both man and zone coverage.
Could be that Nick isn't the issue - maybe it's Tre. maybe it's the depth. I dunno. I'm speculating here as an non-insider with limited knowledge.
Adam Jahns raised a few interesting points regarding the IGGY signing:
#Bears' selection of LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe seems to have everyone thinking. Here are two from me: 1. Nick Kwiatkoski could get a look at OLB. He's been disruptive with blitzes. Played outside in college some, too. 2. Are Danny Trevathan's days numbered? He was a John Fox signing.
Gotta damit, I've thought about it couple of times. He's small abut fast.

wasnt he safety at college too? maybe I got it wrong
All true Belliot - but on the other hand - Deon Bush and Deiondre Hall say hi.
Every now and then you whiff on draft picks, even the packers.
And boy oh boy do I hope they keep whiffing, but this year I’m afraid they landed some good ones up top. Hope I’m wrong.
Just off top of my head...last few years they’ve drafted Dix, Randall, King, Jackson, and Alexander all in the first 2 rounds of the draft. They also drafted Hyde and Burnett in the mid rounds. That’s a ton of draft capital spent trying to fix a broken secondary.

I did a little more digging on this and while I still see Kwiatkoski more as a "Mike" ILB the way Pace talks about "Iggy" has be believing they see him in that same role despite being only 230lbs which of course could increase once he's into an NFL weight training program.
I don't think there's much doubt that he'll be competition for Kwiatkoski as a successor to Trevathan and as backup to Smith.
If he does prevail I could see Fangio possibly moving Kwiatkoski into a role like Dan Skuta played as an OLB in SF provided he can add 10-12lbs. He ran a 4.7/40 at the Combine and 4.6s at his Pro Day and although no one will confuse him with Von Miller he has enough quickness to rush from the edge just not the length Fangio wants from his edge guys.
