riczaj01 you've said that you don't hate the pick but you don't love it either. If I recall you were totally onboard w/ the other big name ILB Edmunds. What exactly do you like about him and what does he have that Smith doesn't?
Let me be clear, I'm not calling you out brother, just wondering why you liked Edmunds better.
So I liked Edmunds versatility to play ILB and OLB. I'd rather have a guy that can play OLB, who's floor is ILB rather then ILB who's ceiling is ILB(int the top 10); in a 3-4. If we are talking 4-3 MLB, different story, but Smith couldn't play MLB in a 4-3.
Edmunds will gain his 'instincts' w/playtime and experience. McDermott was in Carolina and had Luke K, a guy that Edmunds has been compared to, except he's bigger and jus as fast. I like that as K is(imo) the best LB in the game right now.
I also REALLY liked the idea of Fitzpatrick, who would have completed the DB squad on this team if you were looking for someone to help cover in the passing game. Smith isn't a bad pick, super safe and will be a good player. Just not thrilled w/it when you had higher ceiling guys on the board and you are picking in the top 10.
I also really am a fan of Kollman, and I thought of the two breakdowns I was okay living w/Edmunds learning curve at the start of a rebuild b/c of his tremendus upside over Smiths lower ceiling but higher floor. Wasn't just Kollman either, Gil Brandt(another guy I have a ton of respect four had Edmunds as the 6th best player in this draft and Smith as 13th. The nfl.com draft profile has Edmunds as a any lb any system player w/all pro potential, Smith has pro bowl potential. Nothing wrong w/that so again, not hating the pick, but you passed on a guy that is more flexible w/a higher ceiling at the same position.
