Kyle Long on working his way back
By Aldo Gandia - March 28, 2018
Kyle Long said he’s working his way toward getting back on the field for what he’s certain is going to be, “the playoff push, which I know is coming.” In an exclusive interview on the signature podcast of the Bears Barroom Radio Network, Bears 100 Proof, Long said he wants to be in pads and playing when he sees Mitch Trubisky shake Terry Bradshaw’s hand as confetti is falling on the Bears at the Super Bowl.
“I’m feeling really good. I had a lot of things cleaned out. I wouldn’t say I got everything fixed cause that would be kind of a two, three, four, five six, seven, eight-year process,” he said with a chuckle.
Long said that he doesn’t play in a sport like basketball where he needs to be 100% healthy, “It’s football. We’re going to run into each other. How healthy do you have to be, you know?”
Long equated his current state of health to that of a rescue pet he owns, a pit bull, who is a little overweight and has bad hips. “Sometimes when he chases my German Shepard around the back yard he starts to limp.” Long said he then keeps the dog indoors so he will avoid running and the next day he’s fine. “I feel like I have some of (my dog’s) qualities and I don’t know when I should stop going because all I know is “go!”
Long added, “All the guys on the team are saying, ‘Dude, what are you doing? You’re clearly in pain. Go get it fixed.’ And, the weight off my shoulder when I got my neck fused and I got my shoulder, my elbow and my labrum cleaned out – I can straighten my arm for the first time since rookie year, I can lift my arm over my shoulder for the first time in two years I feel like I’m 24 again. I haven’t felt this way in a while and I’m excited. And, I’m also excited to show up and be the guy that these young guys want me to be because, whether I like it or not, these young guys look up to the guys that have been on the team.”
Long didn’t reveal if he expect to be ready by the opening game of the season, but it does appear that he’s on a good trajectory to become Mitch Trubisky’s top guardian on the inside of the line.
