What Aaron Leming points out is exactly what I was posting about earlier today.
If other teams see potential in Meredith certainly we see the same and by using a lower tender of $1.9 mil we get to see just how much more than that the market values him at. With $32 mil and change under the cap still on the books it's pretty hard to believe Pace won't match any reasonable offer he gets and also lock him up for several years for far less than he might attract next spring.
It's also hard to believe now that Pace hasn't set himself up to do exactly what's he been able to do by hoarding cap and refusing to make longer term investments in offensive players under Fox and Loggains. It looks to me that he took a running start at this a year ago after getting GMcC's blessing to draft Mitch and reconstruct an offense under new coaching. It just seems to fit.
How many teams will jump in and make offers after watching GBs effort to nab Fuller when they know Pace can easily match any offer he chooses to? I'm not implying no one will but I don't see a bidding war going on especially not when Allen Hurns is also now on the market and a very similar prospect for a WR needy team. He also provides Pace with another option should he decide not to sign Meredith.
So Leming is correct. Why all the angst? Meredith has been tendered which gives us full control of the outcome. No one can "steal" him unless we allow it.

No angst at all. He is perfectly within his right to solicit offers from other teams. Why would'nt he do that.

Exactly, and in reality whether it's been said or not Pace may actually be encouraging it at least indirectly via using a lower tender. For two years now he's made a point of extending or re-signing his core players and I don't believe there's much doubt that Meredith could be looked at as a core player.
IMHO the fairest way for us to see to it that we make a fair offer is to see how others value him and match his best offer if we choose. One way or another he gets top dollar and we pay a fair price if we match it. I agree with you. Cam should be soliciting those offers right now. He has that right.

+1 It actually seems to be a good & fair way to make a deal, and fair to BOTH the Bears AND Meredith.
QUOTE; "As I wrote in the Mailbag recently, it’s going to take a pretty good offer for Meredith to sign, in my opinion. If he bets on himself for this coming season, he could put himself in line for a much bigger pay day in free agency."
If someone is willing to guarantee him $12 mil or more on a longer term deal my guess is he'd have to think hard on that vs risking himself for one year for $1.9 mil in hopes of even better money next spring and it's a cinch Pace and Laine understand this too.
Looking at if from another perspective he's an UDFA with only one year of proven production coming off ACL surgery. Aaron Leming suggested he might get offers as high as $6 mil and that's possible. Hell, Donte Moncrief got $9.6 mil from Jax guaranteed but it's only a one year deal.
If someone wants to go that high for Meredith for a one year deal I'm sure Pace would pass but something more in the $4-$6 mil range seems more likely to me. Then Pace will have a decision to make. Does he want to spend 2x to 3x the tender for just one year?
Beyond believing I'd rather have Cam than Allen Hurns I'm content to see how this one plays out.
