2018 NFL Draft: UTEP's Will Hernandez should be on Bears' 2nd-round radar

The 2018 NFL Draft is roughly two months away and free agency will fill several of the Chicago Bears’ current needs, but several prospects should be in Ryan Pace’s draft plans regardless of their eventual moves on the open market.
One of those players is UTEP’s Will Hernandez, the mammoth offensive guard who would represent a great consolation prize if the Bears miss out on Notre Dame’s Quenton Nelson.
Here’s what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote about Hernandez:
Hernandez possesses a rare combination of power, balance, and athletic ability. He is a plus run blocker with the anchor and footwork to handle himself in pass protection as well. Though he lacks height and length teams would like, it shouldn’t hurt his stock much. Hernandez should be able to step in as an immediate starter with a high ceiling.
At 6-foot-2 and 348 pounds, Hernandez is a beast in the trenches with better-than-expected quickness for a guy his size. There’s a chance Hernandez will sneak into the back of Round 1, but if he falls out of the top-32, he’ll be a popular name at the top of the second round.
After declining the 2018 option year in Josh Sitton’s contract, the Bears have a glaring need at guard. The roster is without a starting-quality player to replace him and a move in free agency or the draft has become a necessity.
Chicago drafted Cody Whitehair in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft and prior to Hroniss Grasu’s season-ending injury in that season’s training camp, Whitehair was slated to start at guard.
The Bears aren’t afraid to play a rookie up front.
It won’t be a shock if they take that same approach this season. And while taking Nelson in the first round may be a little too rich for Pace, a player like Hernandez in Round 2 would make a ton of sense.
