Running backs coach Curtis Modkins is joining the Denver Broncos in the same role.
I view that as a loss. Our RB position was doing well. Also, we have some exciting RBs. I am guessing since he is not guaranteed a job after the new HC is hired, he went to where he had a for sure job. Hate to see it happen but I understand.
I understand this is how it is when replacing most or all of a coaching staff here. Coaching turnover is necessary but this constant turnover of GMs and HCs here does take a toll. I guess this is just worrisome to me as we cobble together yet another coaching staff.
In the other thread I read how people are so high on DeFilippo, the position coach for the Eagles, coming here to be our new head coach. I "get it" that he is another QB whisperer guy, and has had a good experience with Wentz there. People say he's had 1 year of OC experience with the Cleveland Browns where he had the #30th ranked offense that one year before he was fired. His QB whisperer guy there was Johnny Manziel, so I give him a pass there because Manziel was a head case.
My rambling point here, is that I wish I could feel as good as others about us re-tooling our entire coaching staff, and getting it right this time. LOL. Dilly dilly, and don't worry I guess :-)

I get where you are at. I am not worried about retooling the coaching staff because other than Fangio, it was needed. I do worry about getting it right, however. I also don't see the hype on DeFilippo. I mean I get why they are looking at him, but I am not sure he is a good HC either. Not saying he is not, but nothing there compared to other candidates that also have some good stuff on their resume.
Hard to find people that have excelled EVERYWHERE they have been though. Those are the guys you look at (especially if they have been the HC).
I have a few preferences, but really can't defend any of them all the way because I simply don't know. Just have to trust that Paces process will yield good results. And he has both Ted and George as sounding boards for who is the best candidate, so what can go wrong?

I agree with all of that. It was a necessary evil to fire the coaches and GMs here over the years. We have that "firing" down pat now. It is the "hiring thing" that is killing us.
And don't get me wrong. DeFilippo may be a great HC here if hired. Regarding DeFilippo, I'm just wondering what he has done as a position coach to show he'd be a good HC? I'm not arguing against it. I just don't understand. He had one season as an OC for the Cleveland Browns. His unit finished #30th in the league that year. I don't understand how that means he is the best HC for us to hire. Again. I'm not saying I know anything here. I just don't honestly understand.
Then, I look at a guy like McDaniels and think about the fact he's been an OC calling plays in Super Bowl wins. The guy, as a coach, has 5 Super Bowl rings. Five. He has coached a guy who is arguably the greatest QB of all time. He has been mentored by the greatest head coach of all time. But people would rather have the QB whisperer position coach instead. The guy who was OC for the Cleveland Browns and no SB rings for him... his offense finished 30th in the NFL that year. LOL. I honestly don't think I know anything here... I don't. But how is the QB whisperer guy "clearly" the best HC for the Bears over the guy with the 5 rings? What am I missing.
I feel like a blooming idiot because I don't see the logic in all of this.

Personally, I don't see either McDaniels or DeFilippo as must have, can't miss guys. A good coordinator does not make a good HC, so I don't know. I still like Toub, and I liked Nagy, but the KC game is really making me wonder if I was off in that assessment.
We've had and lost good RB coaches before and beyond teaching them the plays and where they may have blocking responsibilities, pass routes, and maybe ball security what else can a RB coach teach? Johnny Roland was the Bears RB coach in the '80s but I don't think he ever made Walter or Neal Anderson the RBs they were.
Jordan Howard's toughness together with his vision and instincts make him a very good RB and that can't be taught. IMHO no one teaches great RBs how to run they just teach them how to blend that talent into an offense and how to become complete backs. Modkins was only here for one year anyway. Before him it was Stan Drayton in 2015-16 who also coached Zeke Elliott at OSU.

Yeah, I agree. Nobody whose name has been mentioned so far is a slam-dunk can't miss guy. And this includes the Grudens, Harbaughs, McDaniels, etc. etc.
This is the Bears. Things and people have a way of not fulfilling dreams here.
I do believe there is a range of risk based upon what a candidate has experienced in his career though. Some of these candidates are a bit on the thin side if you objectively look at their NFL resume to date. That isn't foolproof indication of future performance on the Bears, but it is hard supporting evidence to consider. Just grabbing the guy we hope is the next "quarterback whisperer" in hopes this is best for the Trubisky era, may or may not give us the best head coach.
Some of the candidates have a more impressive resume than others.
Granted, that in-and-of-itself isn't a slam dunk indicator of future performance for the Bears. But only a fool would totally disregard hard supporting evidence like that when considering a head coach hire. All have good and bad things to weigh and consider. And then, based upon that evaluation Ted, George and Ryan (whomever is making the choice here) needs to project (as best they can based upon the evidence) what they believe the guy can do here in Chicago - and then get it right this time. I'm hopeful, but not confident, they can do this. They sure have whiffed to date on it.

I though KC looked good in the first half. Then the wheels fell off but my reads said Reid was calling the plays.

KC was a team collapse.
From what I saw on Twitter it was Reid who was calling the game.

Watching the game I was just stunned by the 2nd half collapse. KC went from looking like a powerhouse team in the 1st half, to looking a lot like our 2017 Bears in the second half. KC coaches got schooled bigtime in that game.
