I looked up the Trestman and Fox hire dates. Both were in January. But, if the new HC ends up being on a playoff team, does that mean it won't happen until the team is done for the year? How does that work?

Yes. I remember tracking Quinn because he was the guy I wanted. If a guy is in the playoffs, we can't hire him until his team is done. And I posted an article with the open dates that guys in the playoffs can even be interviewed.
It stinks because potentially some of the best guys will be playing in the SB. But if you wait to hire him, many of the assistants will be gone. But I would suppose if the guy knew he would be hired, he would tell his potential coaches not to go elsewhere. But then there are the positional coaches, etc. It's best to hire early, but really even better to get the best guy. If you have to wait a year to do the guys under the coordinators, then so be it. But those guys are important.
Logistics gets tricky and people like to grab a job when offered to be sure they are employed. Some of those guys won;t wait until you bring in a SB coach after the SB.

depends if they like a coach not in the playoffs. otherwise around my birthday (14th)
They can't officially be hired while they're still in the playoffs but that doesn't mean an agreement can't be reached before their playoff run ends. The Super Bowl is an entire month off. Few team will wait that long without a commitment.
There would be no reason for allowing interviews with coaches from playoff teams now if those hiring can't reach an agreement in principal before that coach can officially be hired. But if Pace hasn't named one by next week I think we can be pretty certain his guy is working with a playoff team.
So any coach from Minny or Philly still won't be eligible and if KC wins none of their coaches will be eligible. Either NOLA or Carolina will be one and done. We've only interviewed Wilks from Carolina and no one from NOLA has been scheduled that I know of. So I doubt we'll have a new HC named next week.
