Report: Bears request to interview Matt Nagy Posted by Charean Williams on January 2, 2018, 9:07 PM EST
The Bears have requested to interview Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.
Nagy also will interview with Indianapolis.
Chicago, seeking to replace John Fox after three seasons, also has interviews with Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Nagy, a former Arena League quarterback, took over as the Chiefs’ play-caller for a Dec. 3 game against the Jets. The 39-year-old is in his fifth season as a Chiefs’ assistant.
I like Nagy. Glad to see they are interviewing him. Not sure he (or the others for that matter) are ready to be a HC, but I like what he has done and how the offense did when he called plays.
I'd say DeFilippo, Nagy, and Shurmur are very high on Pace's list. If I'm hiring I want to meet with my top prospects early so I have time to do a second interview before deciding. If any of those college coaches whose names have been mentioned were on Paces list and interested we've heard nothing yet on any of them including David Shaw. So more rumor than fact maybe?
I'll be interested to see whose been interviewed up to and through this weekend because in all likelihood Paces choice is included in that group. That doesn't mean he'll get him but I believe who he wants is in this first bunch. Pace is pretty decisive once he hones in on his guy so if he can come to terms with someone I wouldn't be shocked if he made a quick announcement.
The longer it goes on the more it means to me that the top guys are weighing their options and his hiring position is weaker than others. Could be $$$. Could be length of deal. Or it could be that like some of the GM prospects before he was hired some want no part of working for Phillips and GMcC and in effect are telling them they can shove all their historic team crap up their joint asses. This is 2018 not 1940 or 1980.

Not sure if he is ready and there would be growing pains with him. That being said, learing from Reid helps for sure and I've read that they wanted Trubisky too. Reid is saying he is the best HC prospect he ever had on his Coaching tree.
Nagy’s rumored staff OC: David Culley, former WR coach and currently Bills QB coach DC: Mike Pettine

You have to take into account the limitations on when these guys can interview as well. Some guys are available/allowed by league rules to interview this week...some are not.

True but what I'm thinking is if Nagy is available so would Toub and so far that's not a name we've heard.
Now, it could also be that he's already sold on Toub but is looking at other options who contrast to him and those who might be good OC prospects but but doesn't "feel" that way to me. Five'll get ya' ten Toub is going to Indy and it's become a known fact. I could be way off base but that's my hunch.
If he hires an OC type and Fangio can't be retained he's got guys like Pagano and Del Rio as top DC guys too so the feeling may be that it will be easier to create long term stability this way than to keep a top OC like DeFlillipo for more than a year and once again we end up like we did with Gase as an OC.

That's my gut feeling.
Ballard knows both Nagy and Toub. The fact he zeroed in on Toub speaks volumes. Also, since Ballard and Toub are close and both know the Bears already, Ballard tried to get the Bears to make adjustments and they would not. Since they both know the issues and Toub knows through Ballard that the Bears are inflexible on them, Toub may not want the job either.
I really think that the pair of Ballard and Toub will bring the Colts back quickly. Irsay doesn't deserve it but he made a good hire in Ballard.

Like his father before him Jimmy Irsay may be a semi-detestable drunk but he's proven to be a far better businessman that GMcC and Teddy Bears who seem only interested in hearing what they like to be told. That's how we ended up with Focks to begin with.
I also suspect they have Pace now "playing the game their way" which IMHO is never good. My impression is he came cheap. He's inexperienced and therefore malleable and doesn't want to risk losing his first GM job. So by putting him in charge of this HH expansion and extending his deal they assure themselves of his cooperation. I'd say it's that simple.
Phillips has always run the Bears this way. It's how he protects his little kingdom. The Mcaskeys won't fire him because they don't have a clue of how to run the team without him and he's the only one they trust. There will always be a difference between how they tell us it works and how it actually does work.
When the results seldom change it usually means management has not dedicated themselves to assuring they do. They talk about it because they're expected to. What else can they do if they expect to keep fan loyalty? But the truth of how thing actually run is their deep dark secret.....or so they think.
In reality it couldn't be any more obvious if they hired a sky writer to advertise it or a plane dragging a banner that said "This Is Our Team. We Won't Sell and We'll Do It Our Way". THAT is the more honest truth. So.....we can be as optimistic as we like but expecting different results is trusting more to luck than anything because.....

Could be. I wouldn't necessarily discount McDaniels in Indy just yet though...but we'll see.
