Agreed need to use the Draft an FA to fill the holes. Hopefully we could fill both WR and Edge in FA with some experienced players. Draft best available and let them rotate in. We need both
Good WRs are much easier to find in FA then good Pass Rusher.
Seeing that we need another pass rusher, there goes our 1st round pick.
We may be able to draft a WR in the 2nd round while also picking one up in FA... Allows one to develop while the other is day one ready.
The more I think about it, I'm like, we need this position... no, we need that position... and it's like we need 6 first round draft picks this year :-(
The only way we can get ahead is for Pace to:
1. Re-sign our own best players who will be FAs this year. Don't let them walk. That has hurt our team in the past. 2. Do one hell of a lot better getting a stud or two FA from other teams. 3. Hit home runs in this draft. This is not the year to whiff on the top 4 picks of our draft class (a 1st, 2nd & two 4th round picks). Those four picks need to be stellar.
As you say, he needs to use both the draft and FA to make this team better. Anyone that thinks otherwise is mired in old Fox think.
But....but....but.....using FA will cost money and you can't "overpay"!!!
Its way better to cheap out on hidden gems like Markus Wheaton, Eddie Royal, Quentin Demps, and Marcus Cooper. Everyone knows that.
yeah JABF. I don't even understand why I get pushback on that it is just simple logic. Ric is not the only one. I think there are one or two more that feel like FA should only be used to fill holes if you are a player or two away from the SB. While I get that is a legitimate to use FA, it is certainly not the only way, nor is it the most productive way. Maybe people equate FA with overpaying, but one does not mean the other. Just because you go into FA, that does not mean you ALWAYS overpay.
I respect everyone on this board and I know people don't say stuff that they don;t believe in, so I'd like to understand any valid reasons why people don't think that FA should be used just as extensively as the draft to build the team. I think anything less is negligent on the GMs part.
I would love to get to the point like the Ravens and Packers where we solely use the draft and get compensatory picks. We have to many holes now though and need to use both tools to get over the hump
I would too but we are nowhere near that point. You have to string together solid drafts netting 2-3 starters minimum year after year consistently to get there. We can't judge Pace's 20117 draft at all yet. His 2016 one looks pretty good. His 2015 effort was a disappointing fail. That's just not the level of consistency needed to make FA an "optional" type of thing for us.
I'd also add that the Packers have taken FA-avoidance to an extreme and its really hurt them. They acted as though having Rodgers meant they could ignore everything else. As good as he is and as well as he covers for the Pack's other deficiencies, it still shows through. How many times has Green Bay crapped out in the playoffs because they failed to shore up TE, RB, and especially the defense??? Seriously, Aaron Rodgers should have 3-4 SB wins by now and instead he's only had 1 APPEARANCE and a big reason for that is the Packers management has turned its nose up at FA when they could have made a few key signings to bolster the rest of the roster outside of QB, OL, and WR.

But, lets not forget one thing, all these guys got essentially 1-y contracts
Uhhhh, yes and no. I agree they weren't blockbuster deals but all of these guys got multi-year contracts with at least some guaranteed money past the first year. So that's not completely true. Substitute Sims for Demps if I'm wrong. And Sims has also been another one of those 2nd-tier, "value" type signings that Ryan Pace seems to love.
We can move on from Wheaton and Cooper (and Sims) this year but there will be some dead cap associated with doing so.

C'mon mp, we are talking about 750k for Wheaton, 1,5 mil (2y) for Cooper and 1 mil (2y) for Sims. Fair tries.

They're modest amounts in the grand scheme I agree. Its fair to credit Pace with giving himself fairly easy 2nd year outs with all these guys (Glennon's dead cap is $4.5m BTW).
Of course, that's kind of like crediting your boat's manufacturer for putting comfy life rafts on board to use after it sinks 1 year later.

I agree, but it seems to me like Pace is pacing (!?) himself, or better said - learning. Many short contracts. He still didnt have enough faith in his guys and/or himself.

Exactly BSB. WHen you finally get your roster set, you switch from using FA 50%-50% with the draft to build your roster to what is the traditional approach of just getting one or two missing pieces and not worrying about overpaying if you think it will win you the SB. You use FA for just one or two positions and bargain hunting while you have the draft for your workhorse.
But you can't keep getting rid of talent already on your roster or you will never get to that position.
