Each week until the NFL Draft, we will evaluate one prospect, and see how that prospect will fit the Chicago Bears. This week’s prospect is wide receiver Calvin Ridley from Alabama.
One of the Chicago Bears’ biggest weaknesses, if not the biggest, is the wide receiver position. The Chicago Bears top receiver right now is Kendall Wright. Beside him on the line are Dontrelle Inman and Josh Bellamy. A wide receiver overhaul is bound to happen this off-season. it will happen in free agency, and in the NFL Draft. Fortunately, the Bears could find a superstar in the making in Calvin Ridley from Alabama.
Overview:
Calvin Ridley is arguably the top receiver in this draft class. Ridley doesn’t have the ideal height (6’1) teams want in their #1 receiver, but he makes up for it with his physical style of play and his huge catch radius. There’s no doubt in my mind that Ridley’s the type of player that unlocks Mitchell Trubisky’s true potential.
The Bears are lacking wide receivers that are playmakers, and that’s exactly the type of player Calvin Ridley is. He’s great after the catch and is always a threat with the ball in his hands. He has game-breaking speed and the leaping ability to secure jump balls.
This season Calvin Ridley has 55 catches for 896 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Based on those numbers, Ridley doesn’t have many catches but, when he does, he makes the most out of his opportunities. One thing that is a concern is he only has 3 touchdowns, which certainly has to improve at the next level.
Pro Comparison:
Amari Cooper from the Oakland Raiders. Alabama loves big, physical receivers, who have the strength to overpower a defender and the top speed to cruise over the defense. Ridley and Cooper are great route runners and very athletic for their size. A player like Ridley could be the missing piece to this Chicago Bears puzzle, and it’s up to Ryan Pace to make it happen.
