The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Pace announced a roster move on Wednesday morning.
The team has decided to place linebacker Pernell McPhee on injured reserve and in response has signed linebacker Jonathan Anderson to the active roster.
It's a tough blow for the linebacker as he's battled through a shoulder injury in recent weeks and was kept out of the team's game against the Bengals this past weekend.
It's very tough to imagine the 29 year old being back next year in Chicago, McPhee is out of guaranteed money and the team would open up $7.075million in cap space if they decided to release him during the offseason.
While regarded as a leader off the field, he's struggled to get any reps on the field due to chronic knee issues and having spent the last two preseasons on the PUP list.
McPhee has pocketed $15.5million in guaranteed money on his Bears deal and missed seven total games in 2016.
Do you think this is the end of McPhee's time as Bear?
I'd have to say yes. Any chance he does have of returning at all would have to be based on a significantly reduced paycheck. Provided we plan to continue running a 3-4 the smarter move here would be to make an offer to Houston for a one or two year deal.
There's only a year separating the two age wise and while Houston has also had his share of injuries he's proven to be a fast healer and none seem to be as chronic is McPhee's. Houston has also been the more productive of the two as far as pass rushing. He's always been able to bring pressure and he has four sacks in three games since his return and just missed a fifth.
Maybe they could come up with an incentive laden deal instead of the guaranteed money, for this time around. Maybe a 1 year deal with that type of contract would work. He is an amazing player when healthy. I just don't know if he would come back on that type of contract though. But who knows?

Well if we can offer some of these bums the guarantees they got when they did nothing for it and never earned a dime of it as far as I'm concerned I don't see much wrong with guaranteeing some $$$ to a guy we cut who returned without hesitation or an attitude, went to work day one, and has rung up 4 sacks in 3 games and who knows how many pressures.
I don't think there's anything illogical about that which could even come close to the illogical deals we handed out to some of these guys. What's wrong with rewarding production? We sure has hell have spent a lot of cash rewarding a lack of it. Make him a fair offer. We can use him. I wasn't all that much in favor of cutting him to begin with.
Did anyone honestly not expect another IR visit by Mcphee? Dude can't stay healthy. He will be let go and we will draft another pass rusher with our 1st round pick...
