The Chicago Bears are weak on the edges. They may be looking to re-sign Lamarr Houston
The previous Lamarr Houston signing was a bad one. Injuries were the catalyst, but overall there was not enough production to go with the availability, and in training camp, the Chicago Bears decided to part ways with Houston. Of course, we know the story from there. Houston is now back on the Bears, and in the weird workings of the NFL, it actually might make sense for the Bears to re-sign him. Will they do it?
Houston is playing great football. In three games since signing with the Chicago Bears, he has four sacks. They have been impressive and have come with some solid rush attempts. The fact of the matter is, at this very moment. Lamarr Houston is the player they have at this position.
That includes Pernell McPhee, whose price tag and cap relief almost guarantee Houston having a better chance of staying with the team, at least at McPhee’s current price. Aside from that the team only has Leonard Floyd and Willie Young signed on beyond this season. Both are coming off of season-ending injuries, and Young is 32 years old. Houston is only 30.
As much trouble as Houston has brought, he is now in the position where he will have to come back on a very cheap price tag, and on a one-year deal. The Bears should dip their toes back in the Lamarr Houston pool for one more season and give them the option of having that depth coming into training camp.
He had earned one before he got cut as far as I was concerned. So it doesn't mean he will stick. Hopefully they will not let Fox make any more personnel changes and we can see what the new HC wants. I like him.
A reasonable contract would be fine. I agree with riczaj01 that he would be a backup. He will be 31 years old next season.
If he was 56 and had productive sacks, he deserves a contract. If age scares some then do an incentive contract. I will take a sack from a 31 year old as fast as I will from a 24 year. Just sign the guys that produce sacks.

+1 I agree. I'm just saying they should tailor the contract to not mortgage the farm on a long-term deal. Age is just one of a number of factors to consider. The guy could be productive for another few years.
How do you distinguish between a starter and a backup when we rotate players at OLB as often as we do. That's an aging concept these days. It can't be based on whose on the field for the first series so maybe it's based on snaps?
Think about it and then add to that when starters go down as often as ours have the second line guys in the rotation end up as starters and getting more snaps anyway. Age is nothing more than how we recall when we were born. Pep is 37 and still getting double digit sack but he's another guy we released way back in 2014. He's had 35 sacks since then or roughly the same number he had in 4 years as a Bear but at 34 he was too old huh? LMAO
Enough of this well he's this age or that age. Look at the player not some trite bs some media guy writes. He's also only played 34 out of 62 games since 2014 so that would mean less wear and tear too wouldn't it? Injuries have been his issue not a lack of production due to age and that should be obvious by what he'd done since he got here. We need to use some common sense again and stop parroting what some sportswriter says.
Make him a fair offer for a couple of years and maybe guaranteed year one if necessary. It may not be. I don't know what other offers he may attract but he's here trying to prove himself already and doing it. That's more than we can say for a half dozen other FAs we picked up this year. We need to pay producers not non-producers. Wow, imagine that concept!
Houston and McPhee are 2 , in a long line of "misses" in our ventures into FA . Out with the old in with the new - let's build this team the right way ... through the draft .
