Heading into training camp, there were hopes that a young but unproven receiving corps would jell and enliven the passing game. Instead? An avalanche of injuries pushed the Bears into Plan B. Then Plan C. And then Plan D.
Cameron Meredith’s torn anterior cruciate ligament in the third exhibition game might have been the most significant blow to the offense, also a major setback for an emerging playmaker whom the Bears believe will become a significant building block.
Kevin’s White’s latest season-ending injury — a broken shoulder blade in Week 2 — registered as the most depressing development.
And then there’s big-money free-agent signee Markus Wheaton, whose major health issues (appendectomy, broken pinkie, torn groin) have outnumbered his regular-season catches (one).
It’s no wonder the Bears passing attack has been anemic, ranking 31st in yards per game (157.5) and 28th in yards per play (5.2).
Kendall Wright (22 catches, 259 yards, one TD) has been ordinary from the slot. Tanner Gentry’s production (three catches, 35 yards) has not matched the fan base’s excitement. And now, the second half of the season may revolve heavily around how much the Bears can squeeze out of Tre McBride and Dontrelle Inman, who was acquired last week in a trade with the Chargers.
I don't understand how this really could have been a surprise. I don't think many Bears fans were really comfortable with the WR situation. I know I wasn't. I hoped that White would come on, but it was more hope than expectation after not much news came out of TC and the PS was also very quiet.
That most fans could see it but the Bears could not is more than scary.

Agreed. Cam Meredith has been a nice "find" for an UDFA but he's still not a WR whose gonna dominate a game and I think we know by now that Pace's continued dependence on White to break out at any moment has never been more than a stubborn folly on his part. Even when uninjured White has never shown signs of becoming a #1 WR.
The Wheaton deal seems to be about on par with signing Glennon especially since he came with an injury history as recent as 2016 and at best has never produced at a level much above a #3 WR. It always seemed foolish to me to sign a 5'11"/185lb guy to replace 6'3"/220lb "aircraft carrier" type like AJ who could and did dominate many times.
At least by trading for Inman we've brought a taller type guy back onboard and that may help provided he and Trubisky can get on the same page AND we can provide him with some decent protection. But assuming it may take a few games for all of that to happen if at all it still can't be seen as much more than "too little, too late" by me and others.
I still can't believe Pace gamble with an injury prone WR. After his first 2 seasons you should realize the man can't handle the NFL. Not everyone can and its unfortunate that his body can't handle the hits.
Reality I saw White never being a good WR. You don't miss 2 years and bounce back like its nothing. Sure in the league where "anything can happen" can surprise you but the numbers say something else.

Okay, White broke his shoulder blade? Are his bones made from Paper mache? Is he going to be the next villian in "Unbreakable II: The Re-Breakening". Man, thats just nuts.

In all fairness, he ran out of legs to break. He had to move on to arms or shoulders and he picked shoulders.
Ya' know sometimes when you make a mistake and don't want to face it and admit it how you sometimes cover it up with even more mistakes? This looks a lot like that to me.
White isn't returning this year and the only reason he'll be around next year is because he has a guaranteed contract. We've shipped out less injured players who've actually caught on elsewhere but they weren't our 1st round pick. I think at some point in time Pace is just gonna have to fold this hand and stop bluffing on a small pair hoping a card will turn for him.

The good news is that the human body has 206 bones, so we could have great longevity with this guy. I figure he's got ~200 more seasons of IR in him. Give or take anyway.
