I gotta laugh at the comments about Fangio over Fox as HC when the hit on Fox is lack of risk taking. We're talking about a DC, who, regardless of his HC, has been one of the most conservative play calling DCs in the league. How often are we sending 5 rushers at the QB? What was his record of doing so with the talent rich 49ers? Fangio's a good schematic coach who plays the fundamentals which is one of the reasons he's here with Fox. The notion that Fangio is going to be more open to risk on the offensive side of the ball as a conservative defense coach is crazy talk.
I'd also add: Why in the hell would Fangio ever want a job as the Chicago Bears HC? To get the position Fox would need to be fired. Why would Fangio, a member of Fox's staff and believer in Fox ball (traditional football) want to come to a team that unloaded their HC after three years of slow steady improvement from a bare cupboard? Not me. **** CHicago. The Bengals and Colts...would be better deals for Fangio as their fan base, owner and GM all support their HCs when times are tough (same goes for any other talented HC - why come to Chicago if Chicago is churning coaches - look elsewhere).
I see Fangio in a number of ways as being a far better coach than Fox who I still say is not a teacher but more of an administrative guy brought in to "change the culture" by an ownership out of touch with just how sparse the talent was on their team and also unwilling to commit to FA as a source of rebuilding ergo Pace and his willingness to build through the draft.
Fangio has managed to improve his unit each year despite injuries and with the addition of draftees and middle tier UFAs who've played well or gotten even better in his system. Just the opposite tends to have been true on offense once Gase left. Fox was never equipped to oversee an offense and Loggains is simply not all that good at building his schemes and play calling under Fox. Had Gase remained as OC I think we'd be much farther ahead on offense.
Why Fangio would take the HC job is pretty much based on both his motivation to become a HC and the opportunity to become one with a team he has helped to build and one he's knows pretty well. People get promoted in business all the time when a superior leaves or is fired. I've been promoted that way in my career and I would guess there are others here who have as well. So I don't see Fox and Fangio as in any way being attached at the hip.
I see Fangio as a scheme oriented coach but one whose also clever enough in his schemes and play calling to avoid being as predictable as our offense has become. And I don't get the 5 rushers thing at all. Fangio has blitzed his ILBs at times but it's never been a huge part of his schemes either here or in SF. If you're getting decent pressure rushing four why expose a zone in your secondary needlessly? IMHO massive amounts of blitzing aren't needed.
I think the bottom line here is the Bears need to make a coaching change and I believe they know that as well. Fox is not the guy to handle a team like this with a young QB and the need to add even more younger talent soon. When they do it and how they will go about it I can't say. All I know is that it had better be very well thought out this time or we'll lose whatever momentum we have gained even though most of it if not all has been defensive momentum.
