We aren't being cheap with our own top dogs and Sitton fell in our laps in a most unexpected manner. Massie had a rap as bad pass blocker in AZ and he verified that rap yesterday. $6 mil may not seem all that cheap but top OTs can get twice that so it's is a bit on the cheap side.
I like Leno's chances of getting somewhat better but even he will have ceiling based on his size and the fact that his run blocking is below average so far. That said he's about the lowest rung we should accept as an OT and he's also limited to playing LT so he'll never be a costly player.
It's tough to find FA OTs at any price but if you can't draft a good one you either get lucky with a bargain basement FA or you have to spend more to get top shelf talent. Massie isn't top shelf talent. As a pass blocker he about on par with JWebb and that's not good enough Alex.
we'll see about that, im still trusting our scouts and GM on Massie sign. I will form an opinion about him in the next 8-10 games
He may do better against lesser competition but from what I saw yesterday he won't get any quicker as far as his ability to kick out and and protect the edge. Once a speed rusher can dip his shoulder he can blow right by him and that happened repeatedly yesterday. No matter what they do they can't make a slow footed OT faster.
Leno on the other hand is not slow footed but he finally got aced later in the game as Houston was sending a speed rusher at him every down and he tired. Massie on the other was getting beat from the 1st Q on.

"Winning football starts with good, sound line play on both sides of the ball. The Bears’ loss to the Texans can be directly attributed to the poor play of the offensive line which prevented Jay Cutler and the skill players from having any chance at being successful."
I have to admit the OL looked pretty bad. The running game had poor blocking in particular. Fox wants to run the football. But to do that the Bears need better blocking. Of course the passing game had its own problems too.
The OL talent really sets the ceiling for the offense... and to some extent the team's season for that matter.

With two new guys on the interior of the line, and one a raw rookie whose never started a game at OC in his career, I'm willing to grant some grace there because that zone scheme requires some coordination especially between those three on the inside. But the pass blocking in the second half was an atrocity with Massie being the one most prosecuted. The guy has concrete feet.
I can see the OL improving over the next few weeks but I sure as hell don't know what more they can do about Massie's pass blocking than to give him some help. That and getting Whitehair up to speed on blitz pick up and an ability to suss out stunts so he can spot them and handle them. If the pocket broke down that was the major cause of it.

If you saw Kyle Long during the game giving Massie all sorts of shit on the bench after letting Cutler get sacked and then heard him post-game, I think we are getting the 2016 version of Olin Kreutz. He looked angry enough to kick someone's ass.

Any team has a hard time run blocking when the opponent stacks the line . Quick slants would have gashed them and loosened things up - but we didn't use any , and that's just dumb coaching .

I agree. When your facing a fierce pass rush you need to slow down, you run some quick slants and outs and some screens and draws. Play calling 101 there.
its always amazing when bears coaches can't seem to figure that out.

Check out the article on Massie I posted and my read on it chuck. Massie is gonna be a huge problem in pass protection and no matter how much Kyle yells at him his biggest shortcoming isn't fixable. He's simply too slow to handle speed off the edge just like Mills, JWebb and OMG before him.

I have to think that's pretty much what Fox was referring to when he said that Houston made adjustments in the second half and we didn't. Loggains game plan and play sheets had no answers for those adjustment.
IMHO KW is the perfect guy to be running those quick slants because with his size and speed he'd be crossing into zones where a Safety or NB would have to cover him and he's much faster and bigger than they are. But here's where White's issue with not getting his job down come in.
Cutler probably can't and won't trust throwing to him on those routes and I addressed that in another thread. He and Loggains will select pass plays to receivers he does trust and ignore those that require he throw to a receiver he doesn't. So this is yet another way where White being so far behind the learning curve is hurting the offense by limiting it's options.
Jay said as much when he emphasized that they need KW out there playing fast and drawing attention away from AJ, Royal, and Miller and KW is not doing that. He may run a 4.35/40 but he's playing much slower than that due to his uncertainty and hesitation. Cutler is not gonna throw crossing routes to KW in the "danger zone" when he's unsure of his ability to adjust to the throw or hold onto it so it doesn't get picked off a bobbled catch.
White is hurting that offense right now and he should be benched in favor of Bellamy and Meredith until he gets his assignments down and Cutler can trust him.

That was the knock on him here in AZ: pretty good run blocker but struggles with speed off the edge in pass pro. This isn't "news" and shouldn't be to the coaching staff. Which is why, when facing a speedy edge rusher and a deep drop is called, there should be a TE or RB giving him chip help every freakin time.
I mentioned that here prior to the Houston game. How something like that gets missed is completely beyond me.
