Will Fuller touchdown leaves Bears defense grasping for answers Dan Wiederer Contact Reporter Chicago Tribune
Danny Trevathan wished he had a better answer. The Bears inside linebacker stood in front of his locker Sunday still bothered by the Texans' go-ahead touchdown, an 18-yard catch-and-run by Will Fuller on a wide receiver screen with 12 minutes, 44 seconds left in the Bears' 23-14 loss.
"I knew that was going to come one of these (drives) down in the red zone," Trevathan said. "We were just in the wrong call for the play. But we're not going to get every perfect call. So we have to make a play there."
Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler said he checked to the screen late in the play clock as he assessed the Bears defense and saw an alignment he could exploit. Fuller caught the pass at the 22, then slithered across the field to his right and into the end zone.
Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman was pushed down from behind by center Greg Mancz as he closed in on Fuller (five catches, 107 yards). Freeman's spill also managed to trip up outside linebacker Willie Young.
"You still have to make the play," Freeman said. "We have to keep making him cut it back to the next guy and then just get to the ball."
Added Trevathan, who was pancaked early in the play: "Basically, you have to break and react. Everybody has to fly to the ball. And you have to keep your leverage so you can push him inside or outside and then everybody can gather up and make the tackle around the ball."
What Oswieler saw was exactly what I saw so give him credit for seeing and exploiting it.
QUOTE; "Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler said he checked to the screen late in the play clock as he assessed the Bears defense and saw an alignment he could exploit".
Glenn had just left the game with Hall coming in to replace him. The Bears secondary was showing pre-snap confusion about who had which receiver and should have called a time out to get coverages straightened out. They didn't.
The screen went against the under manned right side of the Bears defense where the Texans had more blockers than we had tacklers. That works every time. We never even touched Fuller all the way to the end zone. Good offensive call against a bad defensive call.
