Power rankings and record predictions by Matt Verderame
20. Chicago Bears
After a year under the Ryan Pace-John Fox regime, the Bears are still not quite a playoff team. The rebuild was always going to take some time, and it could be another year before Chicago can ascend into January football again.
The Bears had a very nice offseason under Pace, who signed Jerrell Freeman and Danny Trevathan. Both are underrated inside linebackers who can play against the run, with Trevathan also having the ability to drop into coverage.
Factor in a nice draft class and the return of 2015 first-round pick Kevin White, and Chicago has ample promise.
So why aren’t the Bears getting more love in these rankings? The offense is a serious work in progress. White is talented but a rookie, and Alshon Jeffery is terrific but always hurt. Meanwhile, Jeremy Langford has to prove he can carry the burden left for him by Matt Forte.
The defense isn’t without its questions as well. While the front seven is looking better than it has since the days of Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, the secondary still has holes. Kyle Fuller might take the next step from his already solid play, but the supporting cast is a major concern.
I think 20 is a generous ranking for the Bears. I think they'll have a better end of year record than 7-9 (I think 8-8 or 9-7) but coming into the year, I would assume they'd be lower on the list. I want them to earn their higher ranking now. Truthfully, I'd rather have them start out at the bottom of the pack and work their way up proving their status rather than being slapped somewhere in the middle and then, potentially, oozing down after a tough week 1 opponent.

What the **** do power rankings mean again?
Nothing. Or at least to me they don't. Maybe they have some significance to bettors but I don't so to me their meaningless. Besides if any of the top ranked teams lose a QB or another critical player how accurate are they then? With Rodgers the Porkers still aren't the #2 team IMHO but without him they aren't even in the top ten or fifteen.
The only reason I even post then is some like to discuss them and part of my job here is to post threads whether or not I believe in all of what an article put forth. If not for that I'd let someone else post about Power Rankings. I don't believe in them.

Power Ranking a very important it tells us which media outlet hate the Bears more then other media outlets. In other word some guy that doesn't have a clue because they have never bothered to watch any team during PS. And we all know that the draft and FA never helped a team unless that team was one of the media's favorite team and then every move they make is brilliant, even releasing a 3 time Pro Bowler.
NFL.com has us ranked at #30. I don't understand that at all. We may not be 20th, but 30th is just crazy. I don't see us that low. I think 20th is reasonable though.

Another article written a week or more ago by someone who doesn't follow the team. At least the more recent power ranking one hit's closer to the mark. In this one he lambasts the OL and the offense in general but then theorizes about Langford putting up 1500 yards behind an OL who can't block. Do these guy ever read back to themselves what they wrote?
I need to get a job writing stuff like this for pay.

Wow. He had to go back 2 years to bring up Houston's Sack Dance flop as to why we're 30th this year? He's a hater, plain and simple. He looks like a doofus and he can't even comb his hair. I rank him 563,247th on the list of NFL Media Analysts.

The guys that write this stuff are such hacks that even Hub Arkush looks like an expert compared to them. Their editors say produce a Power Ranking so they do but with little or no true research or honest leg work to make an evaluation on. These PRs are basically worthless.
Me thinks sportswriters in general are among the laziest working stiffs on the planet. They write like crap half the time, some won't research and article thoroughly to save their ass, but they always have time to complain about the pregame buffet in the press box, and they're the best the Animal House alumni have to offer.
