Oh that sounds all great except one very major problem what happens to Hroniss Grasu when he comes back next year, because from everyone that seen him play during TC he was do a great job. Yes Pace cured a problem for today but cause a 100 problems in the future. Can we please get JA or Emery back as bad as they were they are light years better then this dumbass

Can you ever have too many good OL? You can answer that better than any of us JJ.

I think the direct answer to that question is it depends. Pretty vague but it has to be because we have no idea where we'll be with these guys a year from now. Suppose Massie doesn't pan out and they decide to move Long back to RT. Then maybe Whitehair plays RG or maybe it's Grasu who plays RG.

Or maybe Leno maxes out and he's not good enough and Long finally goes to LT where a whole lot of Bears fans think he should play anyway. You could damn near say the same thing about every unit on the team when it comes to players rising and falling or injuries happening. What's so bad about stacking up young talent anywhere you can? I think that's smart not dumb.

The best five OL are gonna play and other two or three will continue to compete to be one of the best five. Whitehair and Grasu are on rookie deals so they aren't very costly and either one would probably be a starting caliber backup if it came to that so if there is an injury to a starter like we had this year we aren't scrambling to cover our asses with injured cast offs and street FA level OL.

Man, I'd love to have 53 starting caliber guys on this team.

I actually agree with JJ here. First I want to say that I do think we should have taken him where I think JJ thinks we should not have.

But I do agree that this can cause issues down the road and moral issues right now. It's all about people and how you handle them. The reason I am more optimistic than JJ, is that I think it can be managed. I think Pace might handle it better than Fox. I may not be giving him too much credit, but he seems so old school, he might just say "deal with it".

However, if the players know that they still have a place and can embrace the short term benefits for the team as well as themselves (Sitton is a great guy to learn from), they might not like having to sit on the bench for a few years, but they might not be stewing inside and waiting until they can leave to start with another team.

Personally, I think we had to do it. We were unsettled on the OL. Yes, we have young people we want to bring up, but one of them is now out of the picture until next year and we still have to play games this year. Given some decent management of the issues, we should be good, but yes, there are questions there.

This is pretty much how I see it as well. It wasn't all that long ago that many coaches wouldn't play rookies much if at all and then typically it was only their top picks if the GM insisted because he'd look bad if they didn't play.

With the cap costs of top rated vet starters soaring it's become necessary to fill a few starting slots and many of the backup slots with younger cheaper players no matter where they were drafted. When there are vets ahead of them on the depth chart the rookies or second year guys will start when they beat out the vets in front of them. That's the kind of internal competition you need to produce a winner and it also seems to still be a tradition among certain winning coaches.

No matter how good Whitehair may be on a snap by snap basis Sitton is probably better in all respects and less apt to make mistakes or be flagged for a penalty. Pro Bowlers do catch some breaks. Larsen probably isn't much better than Whitehair at OC just more experienced so as I posted before I expect him to start before too long.

Next summer when Grasu returns he may or may not be in competition with Whitehair. There's no way to know that now but it sure as hell wouldn't bother me if we had two starting caliber OCs instead of what we have now. The best five are gonna start when the season opens but given the amount of injuries we go through in 16 games and how players rise and fall week to week I wouldn't count on those same five starting all 16 games anyway.

Even Biggsy said much the same in his mailbag answer to what does all this mean for Grasu. The answer was "you can never have too many good OL" and I believe that too.
