Better but I won't attempt to predict how much better on that basis.
One area I expect to improve dramatically is our run defense. Goldman improved his ability to handle double teams quite a bit as the 2015 season progressed and now he has a "man mountain" DE playing next to him whose also gonna command some double teams at time. That may leave Bullard and CWash with some enviable opportunities to create some havoc and disrupt run blocking schemes.
The real question to me is how much better will the pass rush be and how soon? We're both hurting and a bit raw as far as the DBs go and so far some of those guys give up way too much room to receivers that any half way decent QB could exploit and the really good ones will pick apart all game long if we can't pressure them. Year two I'd like to see a much more consistent pass rush no matter how we have to do it or all that happens it they stop running on us and start passing.
Man, people here forgot Shea went to the Patriots and you think the D is going to be better? And you guys call yourselves Bear fans....(warning troll post)
In Fangio I trust. I am big on coaching. The right coaches will get the right players in here. It might take them several years, but when you are good, you know who can do what you want and how to get them to do it. The defense will be much better IMO.
Good point and I think they're getting much closer.
We made huge strides as far as the front 7 go. Goldman's ability to both handle double teams and also provide pressure on passing downs is huge plus as far as a NT goes. I truly believe that kid is headed towards being a consistent Pro Bowl level player. Hicks is playing the version of Fangio's old 5 tech Justin Smith but he's a much bigger version of him and Bullard and CWash can play that LDE/3 tech DT role McDonald played for Fangio in SF. Big difference up front now.
Then you add in two of the best 3-4 ILBs and some young and experienced but decent depth and good OLBs in Young and Houston along with Acho now that someone lit a fire under him again and Jones and Floyd for Fangio to scheme on the edge or as ILBs if needed and the LB core is 100% better IMHO.
One kid I'm looking forward to see develop for them is CB Jacoby Glenn. This kid had a real nose for the ball in college and had he played his senior year instead of leaving early he may have been a relatively high draft pick. He's added about 15lbs to his uber skinny college frame. His biggest drawback may be a lack of great speed but like Hall if these guys can learn to play in press coverage and disrupt the faster guys at the line they can probably play the way Fangio likes his CBs to play.
Strengths:Salty cornerback who plays with passion and intensity. Outstanding hands and effective playing the ball. When he's in position, makes it extremely difficult for receivers to make the catch. Has feel for deep routes and understands when to turn and run. Reliable wrap-up tackler who breaks down in space and sticks his face into the target. Showed improved understanding of off coverage and how to restrict throwing windows as 2014 season progressed.
But overall that defensive backfield has to get more aggressive in coverage and play the ball better this year than they did last. No one seems to be worried about challenging our DBs and IMHO that has to change or whatever we gain in run defense we'll lose right back in pass defense.

D is way BETTER just on that one move alone.
LOL Come on man. You have to do better than that.
Well, I'm old enough to be a troll just not very good at being a troll.

It's all a projection right now, but the pass rush has to be improved from last year. Our defensive line is a year older and wiser in the system. The talent is better so the OLBs are going to get better matchups. And Young and Houston - both who turned it on in the second part of last year - are more developed in their transition to Fangio's 3-4. Overall, Fangio's ability to implement a wider assortment of blitzes and pressure schemes should be at least modestly improved and that's saying nothing of how he's able to utilize the speed element with Leo Floyd.
Again, it's all a projection at this point, but I'd be shocked if the pass rush isn't improved.
