There is no question the name Mitchell Trubisky will go down in Chicago Bears history. However, there is a question about whether or not that will be for a positive or negative reason.
When the Bears decided to give up a bundle of picks to move from the No. 2 to No. 3 pick in the 2017 draft, people were stunned. The trade, clearly, meant a big move was coming, but nobody saw Mitchell Trubisky being the name Roger Goodell would announce. The pick came with a massive flood of mixed emotions.
Trubisky’s story is a rather surprising one. The 22-year-old former UNC quarterback only made 13 collegiate starts before he was named the second overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, his little experience didn’t seem to make a difference, as many NFL scouts still saw Trubisky as one of the best quarterback options in the draft. Even with veteran talent like Deshaun Watson from Clemson and Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech up for grabs, Trubisky was able to grab the attention of many teams.
Throwing for 3,748 yards with 30 touchdowns and a 68.0 completion percentage, Trubisky made a name for himself in the college football world. A name that will now be printed on the back of thousands of number 10 orange and blue Chicago jersey’s.
In many ways, Trubisky is the complete package. He has a strong pocket presence with a large enough build to take more than a few hits. He is athletic enough to slide around the pocket and go on the run when needed. As for his arm, he can get the ball to receivers with little difficulty. The only area he finds trouble is on the deep ball, but that’s a weakness that can easily be worked with. All in all, Mitchell Trubisky is, truly, an NFL caliber quarterback.
One of the biggest reasons the Trubisky pick left people with a confused look on their face, was because of the recent signing of former backup Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon. The deal signed, only a little more than a month before the draft, was a generous one. It gave Glennon a guaranteed 19 million dollars, and it gave Chicagoans a glimpse at the Bears new post-Jay Cutler era, or so they thought.
Glennon is still the plan for the 2017 season and Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Pace has made that clear. Although, things rarely go according to plan in the NFL, just ask former Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raider Matt Flynn. The possibility of Glennon having the starting position ripped away from him before he even gets the chance is entirely possible. If Trubisky can find a way to be the second overall pick after only 13 stars, he may be able to find a way to compete for the starting position.
The overall possibilities of Trubisky starting in week 1 are very slim, but seeing playing time as the season moves on is not unlikely. The Bears have a schedule that can become pretty turbulent, and if Glennon cannot find a way to get off to a hot start, Trubisky may be on the field sooner than expected.
Within the first five games of the season the Bears will see the Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. Not a single one of these first five matchups will come easy. Glennon has not played on a big time stage since he was the Buccaneers starter back in 2013. With an energetic and hungry rookie quarterback sitting on the bench, John Fox and his coaching staff may be tempted to give the kid a shot.
Ultimately, Mike Glennon will be the starting quarterback on paper come game-day but the weight that holds is up for debate.
