I have to disagree here Alex. If you know you have a top 3 QB pick in the second or third row, almost any team takes him. They are too rare. That guy is either going to be better than your starter or one hell of a trade chip. For us, they might have been behind Cutler, but I do not believe that they did not have doubts. And even if they didn't there is still the trade chip. I simply do not believe any team saw it.
I do not think that means all scouting on NFL teams is not decent, I think it's just that none of them are superb. They are human.
Disagree with what?? I dont get it. All that I said is that he didnt want to draft QB while Jay is here, because he clearly saw no mentoring chance
That it was not scouting. Even though all scouts are human and everyone missed it, it was the scouts responsibility to dig these kinds of opportunities out. As it was was to see Tom Brady. Not saying it was obvious (it certainly was not), but the responsibility lies with the scouts to see this stuff.
This video is about the TE Shaneen, but in this video it gives us a glimpse of Pace's vision for the Chicago Bears. If you watch this video along with the one in the previous post (on why he drafted Trubisky) you get a great overview of his vision for the team. I'll be honest, I really really like his vision. He says in that first video that he doesn't want the team to be ordinary. He is driven to build a great team with young players with upside and high-ceilings.
I like how he is wanting to build a young team that can sustain winning for the long-haul. He isn't looking to slap something together in a quick fix. And he obviously isn't trying to impress the sports media, or even the fans for that matter. He is doing it his way. I like that.
In the past several years it seemed like the Bears just patched things together. Too many players were older guys on the way down in their careers. I couldn't understand "the plan" because we seemed to just lurch from season to season. We didn't even TRY to draft a QB high in the draft. Year after year we just ignored the position in the draft... at least in the early rounds. But now we have a guy who "gets it" that the QB position is (as he says) "the most important player position in professional sports."
I think this guy is gonna get it done for us and ultimately deliver a championship caliber team. It won't be this year. And fans will hate on him. But I like his vision for the Bears. It is going to be VERY exciting to watch this young team learn, develop and come together (with all 3 years of his young players) to become a great team. I believe it will happen.
Go Bears!
What you just said! I doubt if I could add much to it.

JABF, looking back, I think he didn't try because he didn't have the draft pick to have decent odds. To be fair, we also apparently did not have much better of a scouting staff as anyone else did because we did not see Prescott being a good pick either. So barring that, you need a high pick.
When we finally had one, he pounced. I like it. It really is a progression in planning. You have to understand what you need to get the QB, and it's a high pick. Unfortunately, you really can't plan for a high pick. You do your best and either you get one or you don't. I look at last years losing season as a blessing, I really do. It is exactly what the Bears needed to take the next step they needed which was to get a QB.
Dak Prescott was missed by everyone. I don't think you can use that as a criticism of the Bears (or any other teams scouting organization). He was the 8th QB taken last year. He was listed as a 5.4 score on the NFL draft site (7th QB overall). CBS sports had him as the 7th QB overall as well. The Cowboys took him where everybody seemed to have him ranked, a day 3 pick. I don't think the Cowboys got it right and everybody got it wrong. I think everybody (including the Cowboys) got it wrong. And the Cowboys caught lightning in a bottle.
There are prospects who everyone misses every draft. You can ask how did future HOF QB Tim Brady last until the 6th round? Or how did HOF QB Kurt Warner go undrafted?

Oh, sure, but if its everybody then its probably not the scouting but Dak himself or a lot of small other pieces

I don't get that. I guess I hold others to the same standards that I hold myself. If I am a Bears scout and I don't recommend a Brady or a Prescott, and he goes on to be a really good QB, I don't say "everyone else missed him too. That's ok". I go back and try to see what I missed. I try to understand why I did not recommend him and try not to make it happen again. I'm sorry, but just because EVERYONE missed him does not mean it was not still their responsibility not to miss him.

So you expect all employees of the organization where you work to never make mistakes? If you were a GM, what you have done differently? How would you create a scouting department that never missed talent, regardless? Fire them immediately if they missed someone? Good luck hiring their replacements.

With regards to FA, I don't think the Bears is going to get a superstar type of player in FA until they are truly in the hunt and close to the Super Bowl.

or until they are willing to way OVERPAY for them.

From what I have seen from Pace so far.. He is not going to Overpay.

No, i never said that, and I honestly do not believe you thought I said that.
What I said was that I hold others to the same standards that I hold myself. That I would have taken it as a personal failure that I missed it and that I wanted to understand why so I could get better. What you are referring to is what I would have done as a manager to ANOTHER person. No, I would not have blamed the employee. Everyone else missed it also. But I would have asked them after the fact if he had seen anything that looking back with 20/20 vision might have shown that he was a good player. In other words, stimulate the desire in the employee to find out why (if he already was not on it).
I would not have done anything differently because it obviously was not something was easily seen. A multitude of people on many staffs missed it. What I would do AFTER THE FACT, would be to do as I mentioned. To make sure that MY STAFF tried to get something out of it so that next time hopefully we would see something that others missed.
Create a department, that never makes errors?..... Please...... that's not what I said or what I do. It IS what I STRIVE to do, and if you don;t have that as a goal, well, then all I can say is that some of your competitors WILL have that as a goal and good luck with that...
You don;t know me from Adam. Publicly, I take responsibility for all my staffs failures, not only because I feel that whatever happens under me is something I own, but because it is the right way to treat people and I always have people from other areas wanting to work for me. You get the best people. Privately, yeah, there is probably going to be a conversation that the employee might not enjoy. But not in this case. No one got it right. But what I want is people who's professional pride was hurt that they were not the one to get it.
And, no... I have no problems whatsoever hiring people.
