It is post-draft now & the 3rd year of Pace's leadership as our GM. How do you feel overall about the Bears under Pace? Do you feel like this is the guy who can return the franchise to respectability?
I was REALLY concerned that we would not use a #3 pick on a QB when we really needed one. I was even more concerned that if we got one, the old time mindset of Fox would play him and that would wast our pick.
Neither one happened. and I think that was Pace. I can't say I love everything. I honestly think he wiffed in FA. You take a look at the Pats. They really use FA and trades. The reason is they almost always have good seasons and don't have an opportunity for high picks often. So they use the other tools at their disposal. I don;t like what we did there, but taking everything into consideration, Pace is a bif step up from either Angelo or Emery. Just my opinion.
This video is about the TE Shaneen, but in this video it gives us a glimpse of Pace's vision for the Chicago Bears. If you watch this video along with the one in the previous post (on why he drafted Trubisky) you get a great overview of his vision for the team. I'll be honest, I really really like his vision. He says in that first video that he doesn't want the team to be ordinary. He is driven to build a great team with young players with upside and high-ceilings.
I like how he is wanting to build a young team that can sustain winning for the long-haul. He isn't looking to slap something together in a quick fix. And he obviously isn't trying to impress the sports media, or even the fans for that matter. He is doing it his way. I like that.
In the past several years it seemed like the Bears just patched things together. Too many players were older guys on the way down in their careers. I couldn't understand "the plan" because we seemed to just lurch from season to season. We didn't even TRY to draft a QB high in the draft. Year after year we just ignored the position in the draft... at least in the early rounds. But now we have a guy who "gets it" that the QB position is (as he says) "the most important player position in professional sports."
I think this guy is gonna get it done for us and ultimately deliver a championship caliber team. It won't be this year. And fans will hate on him. But I like his vision for the Bears. It is going to be VERY exciting to watch this young team learn, develop and come together (with all 3 years of his young players) to become a great team. I believe it will happen.
I like Pace. Still feel generally optimistic about him driving the Bear's bus. There've been turns though...there have been turns... Let's forget all that though and see if this gravel road he's headed down is actually the route to a playoff appearance.

Go Bears!
JABF, looking back, I think he didn't try because he didn't have the draft pick to have decent odds. To be fair, we also apparently did not have much better of a scouting staff as anyone else did because we did not see Prescott being a good pick either. So barring that, you need a high pick.
When we finally had one, he pounced. I like it. It really is a progression in planning. You have to understand what you need to get the QB, and it's a high pick. Unfortunately, you really can't plan for a high pick. You do your best and either you get one or you don't. I look at last years losing season as a blessing, I really do. It is exactly what the Bears needed to take the next step they needed which was to get a QB.

Its not scouting, regarding Dak you make it seem like no NFL team has decent scouting... It was Jay, he didnt want to draft a QB under Jay
When he has holes to fill on the team, in FA he attacks them which allows him to try and go bpa during the draft. His draft plan is generally very tightly gaurded and teams don't know what he seems to want, hense his ability to jump in front of NY and grab Floyd, and why he was able to move up 1 spot for Trib. He told eveeryone the Bears were willing to move back, he's said it for years now, and he's been taking trade overs all offseason to move back. He knew there was a market to move up, and the only time people move up that much in that early in the draft it's for a qb. So he knew the offers, he knew who the offers were for, and he knew how to work w/SF to match those offers.
He has attacked the 2ndry via the draft and FA the last 2 years. He's gotten an OLB and a NT in the draft, he has a backup, potential starting ILB in the draft. He now has a QB, TE, WR and RB via the draft, just in the last 2 drafts. Do they need more, yep, they need another young OT, another CB, another OLB and ILB and another 1-2 DE's. But it all takes time. There are only so many picks in the draft.
I'm betting 5-8 wins this year based on injuries, which is 2-3 wins more then last year. I'm just hoping HH understands that this is a Cub's esque rebuild that is going to take more then 2-3 years. As much as I don't like him, I hope Fox is around at least next year and Pace is around at least 2 years after that.

I have to disagree here Alex. If you know you have a top 3 QB pick in the second or third row, almost any team takes him. They are too rare. That guy is either going to be better than your starter or one hell of a trade chip. For us, they might have been behind Cutler, but I do not believe that they did not have doubts. And even if they didn't there is still the trade chip. I simply do not believe any team saw it.
I do not think that means all scouting on NFL teams is not decent, I think it's just that none of them are superb. They are human.

Disagree with what?? I dont get it. All that I said is that he didnt want to draft QB while Jay is here, because he clearly saw no mentoring chance

I'm honestly beggining to strongly believe that is the case, and I think it has effected the Bears drafting of a qb for awhile now. It was reported yesterday that the Jets strongly wanted McCown b/c of his ability to mentor and solid play, so badly that they went over the top to get him. If, IF, they couldn't get him, they were brining in Jay the next day. SF brought in Hoyer/Barkley instead of Cutler, probably for the same reason. Cutler right now is still on the street, and my guess is that is the reason.
Guys the Bears brought in to QB, have all been able to handle having a young pick on their team that they had to help bring along, or at least deal with, they had no interest in having to deal w/Cutler in that same situation.
