OK, I have been pondering this now for a few hours. I am now of the line of thinking that drafting Trubisky was a ballsy and necessary move by most accounts but it does impact the Bears strategic roadmap. See below:
1. As Soul points out the coaching and team infrastructure just isn't there for Trubisky to thrive in yet. We have him a standard 1st round 5 year NFL rookie contract which covers 2017, 18, 19, & 21. Fox is at least here until the end of this year and could be gone by all accounts as he is not really a fan of rookie QB's. I don't know how the Log is going to manage this QB situation so that for me makes 2017 a neutral year for team growth given all the uncertainty.
2. Team talent and core players - This is where it could get dicey. I would want to think that future core players are day 1 starters who will have solid NFL careers at least until 2019 when we might see some semblance of success with this group. Am by core group I mean players who are primarily drafted and who they have under control until at least 2019/2020 and will be key contributors. That would mean:
Offense:
1. RG: Kyle Long
2. C: Cody Whitehair
3. QB: Mitchell Trubisky
4. RB: Jordan Howard
5. WR: Kevin White (Uncertain)
Defense:
1. NT: Eddie Goldman
2. DE: Akiem Hicks (I am predicting an extension and continued good play)
3. OLB: Leonard Floyd
That is really a total of 8 potentially talented positions out of 22 for O & D by just using common sense and the eye test which is very flawed and absolutely subjective on my part. You are always going to have your contributors via FA but building through the draft is the time tested formula for success.
Bottom Line: I see us needing to hit pay dirt on the day 1 starter we get in the 2nd round and the first 3 rounds in 2018 to start complimenting the core 8 starters I see above. Then will you have at least half of your O & D taken care of and on cheap contract except for the 2 veterans in Hicks and Long. I won't even venture to guess how the rebuild will go with the special teams. So methinks the rebuild has another 2 years to go before it start bearing fruit in 2019. I can and will be wrong but it is almost a certainty this will take time.
Thoughts Bears brothers?
