Soulman, I love ya brother, you know I do; but I don't give two shits about the Pace flip flopping stuff. This isn't a national political election, this is the NFL draft. Flip flopping is "built into the cake" by necessity to keep the completion guessing. I would be more upset if he had come out and told the truth, which would have been stupid.
I mentioned in another thread that I too was a bit taken aback by the cost; however, if he's the guy then he's the guy. Everyone knew the Browns wanted to move up to get him and sometimes you have to pay a bit more for a QB. For better or worse, I also think Pace feels like he "just missed" on a couple of guys in FA, and maybe he feels that way from last years draft too, which may have influenced his decision to trade up. I would have preferred he just waited until the 3rd pick to select him, but if he really wanted the kid and knew another team wanted to come up for him, then he didn't want to "just miss" again. The advantage that Pace has is that he was probably fielding the calls from the Browns to move up to 3 and what they were offering for said trade, so he likely had a good idea they were also talking to the 9ers and what it was going to take to beat them.
I'll give Pace one KUDO that he undoubtedly deserves. There were ZERO leaks about this. NO ONE knew about the Bears interest in this kid and this should tell us for all future drafts; we won't know a damn thing until the announce the selection. The silence is likely what allowed to Browns to be candid with the Bears about trading costs and what allowed the Bears the ability to make the move that they did without even greater cost.
When I look at NFL GM's, I believe there is a fine line between those with a reputation of being "good" and "aggressive" and those that are considered to be "over-aggressive" and "stupid or foolish". That fine line is determined by the success of moves just like this one. If Trubiski proves to be in the top 1/2 of the league then Pace will be considered in the former, but if he fails, then Pace will be assigned the latter. The die has been cast and we will all watch to see how young Mr. Pace will be defined.
