We won't be picking early enough to get one that would make a difference unless we got lucky playing the QB lotto. So far in 20 years we have not won it. But we could build up the whole team to watch it age and then have to rebuild while we still wait for a QB. We did it once. I don't see why we couldn't do it again. We can just keep trying that 10 year cycle until it finally gets different results.
That's solid.
You don't need to pick early. Aaron Rodgers wasn't picked #1 overall. Alex Smith was and how well did he turn out? Tom Brady was picked in the 6th round. Brett Farve in the 2nd, Derek Carr in the 2nd, and Russell Wilson in the 3rd. You're not going to get a Peyton Manning or an Andrew Luck every year in the 1st. Take a few shots at a QB at #2 or #3 this year.
I rather watch an aging team then watch a team that ruins the career of our QB like we did to Jay Cutler.
oh yeah. I forgot about Tom Brady being picked in the 6th. We should be good then.

There are Hall of Fame defensive players who were never drafted. Should we then swear off drafting defensive players early - just because some teams got lucky with undrafted D players? Obviously not. You increase your chances of getting a great QB by drafting earlier in the draft. And heaven knows we need all the help we can get when it comes to drafting a franchise QB here in Chicago.
People are making it out like you can only find a good QB in the top. When this team needs as much help as possible, is it wise to take a huge gamble on a lack luster QB class? One of the top 4 QBs will most likely be there for a trade up or at #36.
I much rather have a Thomas, Garrett, or Adams at #3 and a QB with our 2nd pick then take a huge risk at #3.

I believe so. And I just found out that Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th. Now I get why Pace is trying to trade all of our picks for the entire 6th round. Sheer genius. He does not want to miss the next great QB.

I believe Pace is going to do what you suggest, and I believe this is also what John Fox wants - go defense with that #3 pick and kick the QB can down the road for some other year... like we do every year here in Chicago. And it may be the best way to go. And it is the best way to go if none of the available QBs at #3 are going to be franchise QBs. My gut feeling is that there will be a couple of very special NFL quarterbacks come out of this draft class this year. They will be gone when we draft in the 2nd round.

Isn't it wonderful? And I just heard that a guy bought his 1st lottery ticket and won the lottery. As soon as I read that in our paper today, I told the wife to go charge up our charge cards buying whatever she wants... just max those puppies out, and not worry. Because we will buy a lottery ticket this week too. We will win so much money we will be filthy rich by next week. Isn't it wonderful? The Bears will get a young Tom Brady this year in the 6th round (once we trade down that far for our QB of the future) and I will be a rich man. I love it. America. What a country :-)
You make a great point there. A GM can't fear drafting a great player just because he may change coaches at some point. Draft the best talent you can get, especially draft the best franchise QB talent you can get your hands on. If you have a change in head coach (or coordinators for that matter) at some future point - you still have a roster loaded with solid talent.
I'm all in for (finally) trying to draft a great QB for this franchise. One thing for certain. If you don't even TRY to draft one of the best QBs then you probably won't get one. I have more respect for a team that tries and fails - than for at team like the Bears who haven't even tried in recent years. Sorry, drafting long-shot QBs in the late rounds like Enderle, Fales, LeFevour and the other wannabees aren't gonna get it done.
If not now, then when?
How about when we have a more complete team.
As Soul stated we are basically the Browns. Very few in terms of talented players and have a high pick to get them. Do we take a HUGE gamble on a QB who can become just average or do we get a player like Thomas or Adams and have a greater chance of a pro bowl player?
I'm not saying don't draft any QBs this year. Just don't reach with one so early. When one falls to the late first round I rather we just trade up and get that player.
Even then, with a shot at T.J. Watt and Malik McDowell at #36 its hard to justify a QB.
We have so many holes and a lack of depth. Let's try to fill up some positions first.
Why exactly do they have a greater chance of being a pro bowl player? They have just as much of a chance of being a career special teamer as they do being a multi year pro bowler. Further, you act like it's a fait accompli that a QB that Pace likes will fall in the first round and then Pace can just snap his fingers and trade up to a pick to be able to draft them.

I'm looking more into this "build a solid team, then draft a QB" idea. I went back and checked a few teams out and their draft history:
1. NY Giants:
Drafted Eli in 2004, 4 years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. The year before, 2003, they had a pretty good draft, getting Osi, William Joseph, Dave Diehl, David Tyree, and Visanthe Shiancoe. In that 04 draft with Eli they got Chris Snee, and Gibrill Wilson. In each of the following drafts leading up to 08 they had very good drafts adding players to the team who would upset the Pats in the Super Bowl. They included: Corey Webster, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs, Mathias Kwiawanuka, Sinorice Moss, Barry Coefield, Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, and Ahmad Bradshaw.
So they drafted Eli prior, built the team around him, and they also had Kurt Warner so Eli didn't have to play right away...in fact he didn't play until Warner got hurt against the Bears(I was at that game).

My gut feeling is that is exactly what John Fox wants Pace to do. Skip the QB thing and go with Mike Glennon and Sanchez & some young late round or UDFA wannabee kid like we've done for many years now (Enderle, Fales, Shaw, LeFevour etc, etc. etc..). It sounds like Lovie Smith 2.0 version. The weak link in our franchise has been the QB position, IMHO. We won't win a super bowl until we get this figured out here in Chicago. We are not winning one with Glennon or Sanchez.
I just figure that at some point the Bears need to get serious about the QB position. If Pace truly is good at talent evaluation, then let's see him get us the most important component of a team - a quarterback. If he can't do that then he's not who we need as GM here.
If that does happen, then I would agree with you (and Soul) that it was Fox more than Pace that would have been behind that.

I think it will be BOTH of them - Pace & Fox both.
