For older players like you JJ it sounds like they didn't know the level of bad consequences that have been revealed in recent years. At least I had never heard about dementia, CTE & ALS connections. And many of those players were not getting paid the big bucks that players now make.
Think about the players from the 20's, the 30's, the 40's, the 50's and the 60's.
I keep hoping that technology in the game, and also the rules, will continue to evolve and players can be safer, and the game we all love will remain viable. It seems like technology often offers breakthroughs when we THINK it has evolved as far as it can go. The impossible becomes not only possible - but practical.

Of course. But, fact of the matter is that if it becomes 'safer' its gonna lose a huge chunk of its atraction, stuff like direct hits, tackles... So, its pretty much a losing game.

It may never be a safe game, but maybe it can become safer. I think of how car racing was horrific with drivers getting killed when I was young. The Indy 500 race alone took a lot of lives. After the 1973 race the sport was able to make the sport safer. Now, even though speeds are MUCH faster than in the old days, the sport is safer. Believe it or not, there was worry by some back in the 1970s that if the races were made too safe the sport would become boring and interest in racing fade. Obviously auto racing is much more popular today than back then.
I do hope football can evolve to protect the players more from injuries that do the long-term damage to the brain. A knee, leg or arm can be healed. But debilitating permanent brain damage is a life-sentence that is pretty grim.

Me too. And nowadays a lot of young guys are choosing not to have a career in this sport, cos all of the health issues, known and still unknown

+1 That's a good point I had forgotten about, Alex. That's another reason to try and find a way to minimize the brain injuries as much as possible.

I think it will. I understand that Football will not be played the same way it was in the 1980's. One thing that is good about the sport it can easily be changed and made safer. If there are more rules that helps be safe or technology that will help the players be safe, I'll be fine with it.
